A “TIRELESS” volunteer at a Bradford food bank is one of the latest people nominated for a 2017 Community Stars Award.

The honours are organised by the Telegraph & Argus and Bradford Council to recognise those who make a difference in their local communities.

Unsung heroes can be nominated in the seventh annual awards, across eight categories.

Frances Atkins, who volunteers at the Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank, has been nominated by West Bradford Children’s Centre Cluster, for her work in collecting donations from supermarkets and organisations around the city, and helping distribute them to people in need.

Gail Barraclough, of the group of children’s centres, said in her nomination: “Frances is one of the most generous, caring individuals I have met, she gives a huge amount of her time completely free although her health is not always good.

“Frances never complains and never says no to anyone in need, she often stores food in her own garage just in case a worker rings or calls at her house needing food for a desperate family.

“As a children’s centre team, we contact Frances on almost a daily basis to request food for the families that we work with.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Midland Hotel on Wednesday, December 6, where each category winner will be honoured with the Bradford Medal.

The awards are part of the People Can Make a Difference campaign and are sponsored by Better Start Bradford, which runs schemes in the Bowling, Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton areas of the city, aiming to give babies and children in those areas a better start in life.

This time the awards are also looking to recognise Bradford’s unsung businesses, large and small, who go above and beyond to make a real difference to the people of the district.

Nominations are being sought in the following categories: Community Group, Fundraiser, Young Active Citizens, Good Neighbour, Volunteer, Community Champion, Business Can Make a Difference Award, and the sponsored award Better Start Bradford Outstanding Contribution to Volunteering.

Nominations must be submitted before September 25.
