An impressive firework display wowed crowds of thousands gathered in Bradford city centre for the grand finale of the official opening of City Park tonight.

The light and sound spectacular featured a pair of acrobatic ballet dancers soaring above the Mirror Pool on two glowing balloons followed by fireworks lighting up the sky in the six-acre park.

More than 100 illuminated fountains – one shooting water 100ft into the air - marked the climax of a day of free entertainment to showcase the new public space, which ended with a movie music theme linking to Bradford’s status as the world’s first UNESCO City of Film.

Street theatre, music and large crowds of people filled the park, which has been created by Bradford Council to form a key component of the city’s regeneration.

Tony Reeves, the Council’s chief executive, said: "It has been a tremendous day and we are delighted so many people enjoyed the first event at City Park.

"There is nothing else like City Park in the UK. This event has shown exactly what it brings to Bradford and can deliver in the future.”

More pictures and video from the major event will appear on the Telegraph & Argus website later and a full report will be printed in Monday’s T&A.
