There’s one more day of giving left until the Telegraph & Argus Children’s Secret Santa Appeal closes for this year.

By the end of tomorrow donations and cheques will all be counted and totalled up to reveal the final amount to buy presents for children in Bradford living in poverty.

So now is the time if you have been raising money or just want to make a donation yourself to get it sent in.

An army of volunteers have been wrapping gifts round the clock as donations have come and gifts have been chosen and bought in time for Christmas Eve.

The presents are going out to youngsters living under the breadline across the district – making up 38 per cent of the child population.

Barnardo’s Young Carers Service and the Gateway Children’s Centre at Ravenscliffe will benefit as well as almost 200 youngsters known to social workers in the city.

A husband and wife believed to be the oldest married couple in the UK were among those who backed our charity appeal.

Kartari and Karam Chand had a joint birthday party to mark their 100th and 107th birthdays respectively and had a collection from guests who came from all over the world to celebrate their 86 years of marriage with them.

Guests invited by the Chands, who have now applied to Guinness World Records to see if they have the longest marriage in the world, included the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith, as well as relatives who had flown in from India and Canada.

Their son Paul Chand, who runs the Castle Hotel pub in the city centre, said he had also been collecting cash from his regulars to donate to the appeal.

He said: “We’re counting up what we’ve collected and we’re sending it off so it can help buy even more presents this Christmas for children who might otherwise have to go without.”

Sarah Gate, from the Human Relief Foundation, who are in partnership with the T&A for the Appeal, said: “People’s kindness has been overwhelming.

“The generosity shown to the appeal will make a difference to so many young people’s Christmases this year.”

Yesterday T&A staff at the Hall Ings offices were also raising money at a lunchtime booksale, pictured.
