Bank workers, amateur golfers and footballers hold fundraising events

More money is rolling in to the Bradford Burns Unit Appeal – even though the campaign will surpass its £100,000 target this year.

A charity auction to mark the 25th anniversary of the Bradford City fire disaster yesterday raised more than £1,000 for the appeal.

A signed picture of former England ace Teddy Sheringham fetched £300 and other sporting memorabilia helped organisers at the Bradford & Bingley reach a grand total of £1,955.

The event was organised by Debi Mitchell and Matthew Elener. “I was at the ground and know people directly affected by the fire,” Matthew said. “I am very moved by the charity of the community who have supported our fundraising by donating prizes, and the generosity of my colleagues.”

The Telegraph & Argus-backed appeal is raising money for the burns unit at Bradford University set up after the Bradford City fire disaster which cost 56 lives.

Meanwhile, a football match for the appeal raised £9,000. More than 3,000 fans were at Valley Parade on Sunday for the match between former City players, including Stuart McCall and John Hendrie, and The Co-operative Challenge Trophy finalists, Clitheroe.

The Co-op, which sponsored the game, has raised a further £5,000 for the appeal through store collections.

Liz Matkin, Co-op head of sponsorship, said: “The match was a very important event for The Co-operative.”

In another event, former footballers joined Bradford’s former world snooker champion Joe Johnson for a golf event today for the appeal at the Hollins Hall Hotel, Baildon, organised by West Yorkshire firefighters.

Celebrities included former football stars Bobby Campbell, Trevor Cherry, Terry Dolan, John Hendrie, Mick Bates, Duncan Mckenzie, Lee Sharpe and Martin Buchan.
