A hotel has teamed up with The University of Bradford to host a lunch in aid of the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal.

The meal, at the Dubrovnik hotel, is open to all and will include a two-course meal and the chance to meet Professor Laurence Patterson from the University and hear him talk about the Crocus Cancer Appeal and why it is so important.

The fundraiser is a local charitable initiative between the University, Yorkshire Cancer Research, the Telegraph & Argus and the Sovereign Healthcare Charitable Trust.

The aim is to improve the number of opportunities for the discovery and development of new cancer medicines by raising £1 million for researchers at the University’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics.

This will be used to increase the pace at which cancer medicines of the future can be discovered through the purchase of a specialist piece of equipment called a proteomics mass spectrometer.

Business Development Manager at the Dubrovnik Hotel Simon Grybas said: “We are really pleased to support events like this and hope as many people as possible take an hour or so out of their day to come and have a fantastic lunch that raises money for such a worthwhile cause.”

The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, May 20, at 12.30pm. Tickets cost £18.50 per head, with at least £5 per ticket going towards the appeal.

To book a place at the lunch, contact the Dubrovnik on (01274) 543511.

The event follows on from Crocus Week, which will be held from May 10 to 18. During the special week, as many people, groups, schools and businesses as possible are encouraged to hold a fundraiser to back the appeal and help towards the £1 million target. Schools signing-up will be entered into a draw to win up to £500 worth of book vouchers.

Crocus Week starts with a sponsored abseil down the side of Jury’s Inn Hotel, when 80 volunteers will join T&A staff and the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, and inch their way down the side of the city centre building.

To be a part of Crocus Week, or sign-up for the abseil, contact Victoria Collins in the Alumni and Development Office at the University by e-mailing v.collins@bradford.ac.uk, or calling (01274) 233165. More information can also be found at www.telegraphandargus.co.uk/crocus.
