Teams took to the hockey pitch to do battle and raise money for the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal.

The players raised hundreds of pounds for the fundraising drive by donating to take part in the match and holding a raffle with prizes such as meals, hair cuts and facial massages.

The match between the University of Bradford’s Men’s first team and The University of Bradford Hockey Club first team finished with a four-nil victory for the latter team.

Volunteer development officer for the University of Bradford Hockey Club, Rachel Gunston, said: “It was really good fun, but just a bit cold. Lots of supporters came down as well, which was good.”

The match was organised by the winning team’s captain and club’s president, with help from Miss Gunston. Players approached local businesses for raffle prizes and were delighted with the response and support.

The hope was to raise £500 at the match but that was comfortably surpassed with a total of £702.68 raised.

“Because we got over that, we were really, really pleased,” said Miss Gunston, a fourth year clinical science student.

The T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal is being run with Bradford University, the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

It aims to raise £1 million to go towards buying an ICT a mass spectrometer, which will allow researchers at the university to study the role of protein in cancer ten times faster than before.

It is hoped the machine could hold the breakthrough to developing less toxic and more targeted tumour-blasting cancer treatments, which would benefit patients across the world.

“I think it’s a great appeal to raise money for and the hockey club has supported it a lot. We’ve got more events coming up as well,” Miss Gunston said.

The club is planning a Three Peaks challenge in support of the appeal on March 16.
