A football tournament organised by a Bradford charity will take the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal closer to its £1 million goal.

Sports Campaign Against Racism (SCAR), which aims to stamp out racism on council pitches and at the grassroots level of the game, is appealing for teams to enter a five-a-side competition to raise cash for our campaign to pioneer new cancer treatments.

About 20 teams are needed for the event at Five A Live Soccer Centre in Fairweather Green on Saturday, August 10, which will see all proceeds go towards buying vital equipment for cancer researchers at Bradford University’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics.

Shadow Parvez, secretary of SCAR, said: “We decided we wanted to do something to help the T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal as it is a fantastic cause. The tournament will see 20 teams divided into leagues of five, with the top two teams going to the knockout stages.

“It’s going to be a great event and all the money raised will go towards the campaign.

“It is also at the end of Ramadan, which is a time to support good causes, although the event is open to everyone.”

SCAR was set up in 1999 to cut racism in sport and encourage fair play, as well as support sports clubs in the district with their governance.

It has been applying for funding and hopes to organise a sporting conference in the district with top athletes.

The tournament, which starts at 6pm, has been sponsored by Bradford’s Regal Bakery.

The company’s director Faisel Ali said: “The T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal is a great campaign and that’s why we’re backing it.

“We are also pleased to support the work of SCAR and everything it is doing to tackle racism.”
