Nicola and Duncan Robinson and baby Jacob join research project

The Born in Bradford (BiB) project has hit a milestone with the birth of its final recruit.

Baby Jacob Joseph Robinson was born at Bradford Royal Infirmary on Thursday, June 2 weighing 9lb 13oz.

While he may be the final addition to the BiB community, Jacob is the first child for Nicola and Duncan Robinson, of Thornton.

Duncan said: “We are very excited to be involved in this study. Nicola had no hesitation in agreeing to join the project.”

Like other recruits, Nicola was only too pleased to join a study that uses the information given by parents to help improve the health of babies and children in the future.

The project began recruiting in March 2007 and had hoped to attract 10,000 babies but it has proved so popular nearly 14,000 mothers and their infants have enrolled, including 170 sets of twins and three sets of triplets.

Derek Tuffnell, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at the maternity unit said: “‘It’s really exciting that we now have such a large number.

“We can now start to use the data to consider the causes and outcomes of health problems.”

Professor Neil Small, of the School of Health Research at the University of Bradford, said: “Even though we are not recruiting any new people, we will continue to collect new information about the families.”

The Robinson family is now looking forward to attending this year’s teddy bear’s picnic in Lister Park on Thursday, July 14 from 11.30am to 2pm.
