Cities sign £20m deal to boost jobs and homes

Bradford and Leeds today signed up to a partnership aimed at providing thousands of new jobs and homes in a nine-mile corridor between the two cities.

A three-year funding programme has been agreed, with £20 million of investment secured for housing development along a corridor that covers Thornbury, New Pudsey, Stanningley, Bramley, Armley and Wortley, and also includes Greengates, Calverley and Rodley.

After two years of planning, the scheme finally came to fruition with both cities formally committing to the Leeds Bradford Corridor Partnership at the MIPIM property conference in Cannes, France, today. The partnership is one of the first manifestations of the Northern Way – a strategy to boost the economies in the north of England.

The long-term aims are to create 7,500 homes over the next 20 years, provide refurbished housing along the corridor for which funding has already been secured and develop employment sites on motorway locations, with a potential of securing 3,000 new jobs.

The partnership also aims to improve business growth by encouraging business start-ups. There will also be a continuation of investment in public transport through the introduction of new and improved rail and bus services.

Project bosses said this regeneration had no boundaries between local authorities and would connect residents to the growing economies in both cities.

Councillor Adrian Naylor, executive member for regeneration on Bradford Council, said: “This is the first joint project with committed resources. It demonstrates the two cities working together in a constructive way.

“Both cities have a number of requirements. This includes the need to better connect economic opportunities with a growing potential workforce, the provision of new homes at affordable prices, and the challenge of addressing transport bottlenecks, while safeguarding and improving the local environment.”

Jean Dent, director of city development for Leeds City Council, said: “The Leeds Bradford Corridor is central to the long-term sustainable development of the two cities.

“It is essential that we work closely with Bradford on this project and with our other partners in the wider city region to address the skills, housing and transportation issues to facilitate development and economic growth.”

The two cities’ combined strength includes a growing population of 1.3 million and a shared economy of more than £23 billion per annum.

New research has revealed that Bradford is the fastest-growing metropolitan district outside of London, with an economy valued at more than £7 billion annually.

Alongside the city’s ambitious regeneration programme, the district-wide renaissance continues to take shape with more than £1bn of investment either completed or on site, driven by public and private sector partners.

This includes the mixed-use North Street development in Keighley, which includes retail, leisure and residential space, plus a hotel.

In nearby Baildon, Yorkshire Forward, the Airedale Partnership and Bradford Council are working together on the Baildon Digital Park on a 16-acre greenfield site.

Further ruination for Calverley, Rodley and Baildon then, at this rate there will be no escape from the Leedsford supercity.
Why more shops in Keighley when the existing ones seem to be closing one after another?
I like the "growing economies" bit though, very optimistic.

Yet more traffic to clog up the inadequate transport system."Bradford is the fastest growing city council outside London"In what way it isn't business,it isn't retail, its not infrastructure the only thing I can think of is immigration.

Immigration is higher in Bradford than else where in the country.
I cant see what this plan will bring to Broken Bradford myself. Nothing seem to happen now it all big talk and big ideas which never get off the plans.
bradford is run down now and that regen 2000 didnt do much as well when it had all that money to spend a few years ago. the only thing which got done is a load of sand blasting homes in leeds road area.
They should ask the people of Bradford for ideas because throwing money at it dont sort the major issures out which Bradford hads now.
God Bless

So no retail for Bradford city centre - but for keighley

Doesn't councillor Naylor represent Craven - so by creating retail in Keighley his position on the council is secured

And By Chris hopkins Howarth are improved he secures his seat in Worth Vallet is secured. Meanwhile Bradford Rots - they're not bothered about the town just their wallets.

OOH I'm so mad I can't even type - lets try again:

Naylor secures his seat on the council (For Craven) by making sure Keighley gets retail

Hopkins secures his seat (Worth Valley) by making sure Howarth Main Street setts are improved

Bradford gets nothing AGAIN

Now I'm really annoyed!!!

the deal has been signed but then Westfiled signed a deal--say no more except maybe these projects will go ahead on time and at the right cost as income from the trough of expenses is at risk!!nudge nudge.

we must assume webess is happy with teh bom site called Bradford:

just a thought thought-- Broadway was built in the 1960s and was demolished within say 45 years:how long is it since Kirkgate market was re-invented. By my reckoning that area is coming up for a total revamp shortly!! GOD HELP US!

Does this mean the green corridor along the river Aire is doomed ,that is the only available land from shipley through greengates/apperley bridge,calverley/rod
ley ,kirkstall.allthough £20 million isnt much when you take into account all the new roads/upgrading old roads that would be required. When will the plans be available for viewing?

Without wishing to sound rude you must either be blind or walk round with your head in the clouds. Open your eyes and look at what was our City Centre.
Security word them-make (or not in the case of the City Centre)

Bradford and Leeds together in Cannes. it will be like most holiday romances in that they will come back promising to keep in contact and they never will.

They will get back to dull Bradford and forget all about it. Leeds is actually a nicer city than Bradford and attracts much more business and tourists, where do you think this money will go?

building on greenfield sites? we have more brownfield sites than you can shake a stick at, just sitting there.

building 7,000 new homes in the 9-mile 'corridor' between bradford and leeds? there's precious little green space in that area as it is... again, why not build on/convert the brownfield sites and derelict buildings we already have in the area.

short sighted and driven by greed.

The difference between Leeds and Bradford is this:

Leeds you want to go to
Bradford you want to leave

I recently brought a friend to Bradford and his only comment was "how do you manage to call this dump a city" it's more of a landfill for all the rubbish in the area.

It is strange that when there is any money to spend on so called improvements it is always one side of the city. How about a corridor to Halifax so maybe Wibsey and Queensbury could have a bit of this money that seems to be up for grabs. Or how about a corridor to Hyuddersfield so that Low Moor would maybe get the rail station that keeps appearing and disappearing from the agenda. South Bradford appears to be last on anyone's agenda with our City Councillors
