University students are planning a week of games, rides and carnival treats in support of the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal.

And they have just added £1,429 to the £1 million fundraising drive after counting up how much was collected during supermarket bag packs.

Over the last weekend of January, about 30 students packed people’s shopping in exchange for a £1 donation to the appeal, which is being run in conjunction with the university, the Yorkshire Cancer Research charity and the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust.

This week students will back the appeal once more as part of their Raise and Give Week (RAG), which starts tomorrow.

The first event will be a Disability Sports UK event in Unique sports hall when students can have a go at disability badminton, archery, cricket and wheelchair rugby league or basketball.

On Tuesday an indoor cricket match between students and sabbatical officers takes place.

There will be carnival rides and treats on Thursday and love will be in the air on Friday, for Valentine’s Day, when students can have a go at catching cupid with an archery taster.

A spokesman for the University said: “RAG Week is an annual week of activities where sports, societies and students get together to raise money for two charities.

"This year’s charities are the Bradford Crocus Appeal and Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure.”

The money will help pay for a new mass spectrometer for Bradford University’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics, which will mean scientists can study the role of proteins in cancer ten times faster than ever before.

It is hoped the new hi-tech machine will help the department develop new, less toxic cancer treatments. To support the appeal, e-mail crocus@brad.ac. uk or call (01274) 233166.
