Bradford will remember the Holocaust next week as the city marks National Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Robin Owens, will be joined by Council leader Kris Hopkins and chief executive Tony Reeves at the district's eighth annual National Holocaust Memorial event.

The service this year is being held on the morning of Friday, January 25.

The Lord Mayor will open the event and introduce this year's theme of "imagine... remember, reflect and react". It asks people to remember the past, reflect on the present and react to create a better future.

Candles will be lit to remember those who suffered in the Holocaust.

Members of the Jewish community will attend along with people from various groups including representatives of different faiths, people with disabilities, lesbian and gay organisations and travellers.

Coun Hopkins will light a candle on behalf of the Council and Mr Reeves will light a candle on behalf of those victims not represented at the event.

There will also be a performance by students at Bradford Grammar School.

A concert will follow the main event and Bradford libraries will have displays on the holocaust from Monday until Friday, February1.

A short film will also be shown on the Big Screen at Centenary Square on Sunday, January 27.

The Lord Mayor said: "It is extremely important that we as a city and a district reflect the suffering caused by the Holocaust and other modern-day genocides. It is encouraging that so many people from different backgrounds are coming together at this event and I would also encourage people to view the displays and the film."

To attend, call Abu Bashir at the equalities service on (01274) 437962.

In Kirklees the memorial day is being commemorated at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday, January 24, at 7.15pm. The focus in Kirklees is slavery, for example enslavement in the concentration camps and the slavery of child soldiers in today's conflicts. The event, organised by Kirklees Museums and Galleries, will be hosted by Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Jean Calvert.
