School closed by hole in road
Almost 80 pupils and staff had to be evacuated from a special school in Shipley after a hole 1.5m deep opened up just yards from the site.
Acting head teacher of Heaton Royds Special School Mary Winter was forced to put emergency evacuation procedures into place when the hole appeared in the middle of Redburn Drive this afternoon.
The highways authority erected barriers and police were called to assist.
A representative from Mines Rescue was called out on behalf of the Coal Authority.
The school will be closed until Friday.
Mrs Winter said: "Representatives from highways and the police came up to the school. We were told there was a hole in the road and were asked what the implications were for our school.
"The implications are that this is a special needs school, with people with limited walking abilities and limited understanding and we needed to evacuate safely.
"We went into our emergency evacuation procedure and it worked well - 39 staff and 38 children were safely moved away from danger."
The Mines Rescue representative said: "The site will be made safe in the next five hours. It looks like it is mine workings."
