Tax revolt threat over takeaway

Residents are threatening to withhold their council tax after it emerged it could be spent on parking outside a new takeaway which is now set to open despite their angry objections.

In what has been described as a "complete fiasco" the Council has agreed to pay for a two-car layby to be built for people using a new takeaway in Wrose Road, Wrose, Bradford.

Against the advice of their own officers, and despite concerns over increased traffic, councillors voted in favour of the application.

That was only after it went before the same planning panel for a second time because proposals for an £80,000 traffic calming scheme were not taken into account.

The application was passed earlier this month, subject to opening time restrictions and a parking bay being built.

It is understood the money for the layby will come from Council coffers - a decision which has outraged residents.

Campaigners have described the Council's decision as "ludicrous" and "disgusting" and say they will consider not paying their tax to Bradford Council.

Pam Sandiforth, of Low Ash Road, Wrose, said: "I don't see why we should pay our council tax. It is the council that is footing the bill for this parking place and our money goes to them.

"Why should we pay for a parking bay for a takeaway that we didn't want in the first place? It is ludicrous."

Nicola Brame, 35, whose home in Oakdale Drive backs on to the semi-detached building earmarked for the take away, said: "I feel Bradford Council has only allowed this because they said yes originally without checking with their highways department."

Bradford Councillor Vanda Greenwood sits on the Shipley Area Planning Panel which heard the application in January and again earlier this month.

At the first meeting, the Labour councillor pointed out the traffic calming scheme, which is set to start in the next few months, and the effect it would have on the busy road. She said: "It is a fiasco and has been from the beginning. The only people who have lost out are the residents."

Peter Bridgman, Shipley Area Planning Officer, said: "There is a launderette next door to the proposed takeaway and anybody visiting would also benefit from the parking spaces.

"Waiting restrictions are being considered for the parking bay."

i live practically opposite this proposed venture and personnally i dont see a problem with it, as there is already several shops/pubs around the area, one more is not going to make a difference. The parking bays alone wont stop people parking outside my drive but may help. The amount of traffice going through wrose has nothing to do with a take away that is not even there yet

The problem is we are swamped with them!As you say the main income may be derived from deliveries (usually within a 3 mile radius)therefore even if it was boycotted by some members of the Wrose community it can still flourish from orders from further afield.The bottom line,parking aside, is there are simply too many of them within what is supposed to be a residential area. Is there any district left in Bradford that doesn't have an eaterie with the word Balti after it!

There must be enough demand for all those takeaways otherwise they wouldn't be opening - supply & demand. If people brought their kids up to eat proper home-cooked meals instead of burgers, chips, and kebabs, there wouldn't be any call for such outlets.

Another point, Waiting restrictions are to be considered for the parking places.

So in effect this is just in the scheme of things to get some extra revenue through car parking fines too.

Council tax goes up, service goes down. Cash cows is what the council see us.

One again the man in the street is ignored. Councillors only look out for number one, I wonder what the desision would have been if one of the councillors lived on that road?

I agree that the last thing Wrose Road needs is ANOTHER TAKE-AWAY with the accompanying traffic and mess.
However the area outside these premises has been used for shoppers vehicles for many years. Considering the retial premises opposite should a lay by be considered a safety feature in any event?

The council not fussed about the little person on the street. They do what they like when they like spending council tax money like it there own. That why we need more BNP in power down at the town hall then they can try to put a stop to it and listen to the people of the street.

Where will it all end?! The opening of this take away will now make it 7 by my reckoning between Wrose Health Centre & the Wrose Bull: Hygeian Chinese, Village Balti,Wrose Balti,Claremont Fisheries,Hold King Chinese, Wrose Fisheries + the new one being opened.All this from a council that promotes healthy eating! The only place that can beat that ratio is Blackpool - perhaps the council is proposing Donkey rides on Wrose Rd in the future.
