HOMES in a quiet Steeton road had to be evacuated today following the discovery of an unexploded bomb from the First World War.
Police were alerted at 11.15am today after the device was found in an outbuilding of a property on Summerhill Drive.
The device was thought to be around 100 years old.
An exclusion zone was put in place and residents in 20 neighbouring houses evacuated for around three hours.
A bomb disposal team from the Royal Logistics Corps attended and carried out a controlled explosion in an nearby field.
Police had used around 40 sandbags to make sure the blast was contained to a small area.
Police said residents were "very understanding" of the need for the evacuation.
