Bradford Bulls set to sign major sponsorship deal
11:00am Thursday 11th October 2012 in News
By Hannah Postles, T&A Reporter
Omar Khan
The new owners of Bradford Bulls are on the verge of signing a sponsorship deal with Bradford University and Bradford College which will see them offer students placements at Odsal.
Former Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe, honorary chairman of Omar Khan’s OK Bulls Limited, said he and Mr Khan have been in talks with the educational establishments, which could become the new outfit’s first two major sponsors.
The three-year deal is expected to involve physiotherapy and medical students from the college and university completing placements and apprenticeships at Odsal, while players and staff at the club will be given the opportunity to complete sports diplomas.
Bradford South MP Mr Sutcliffe said the deal would “financially benefit” the Bulls, but said: “It’s an all-round package where we’re supporting them and they’re supporting us. It’s very exciting. They will offer us physiotherapy and medical support and our players will get the opportunity to complete qualifications.
“The university and college both want to develop their sports science provision and that is something we can help them with by offering our facilities.
“Obviously this will be of financial benefit to the club, but the non-financial benefits are massive too.”
Mr Khan, who saved the club from the brink of liquidation on August 31, hailed the partnership as one of the “best things” to happen to the club.
“It’s great that Bradford University and Bradford College have become part of Bradford Bulls,” he said.
“Education is the most important thing in anyone’s life and we can offer them the best educational facilities at Odsal. We want to create a community club and we hope students at the college and university will come down and support the Bulls. It also means we can look after the welfare of our players by allowing them to further their education if they want to do so.”
The deal is expected to be discussed by senior staff at Bradford University and Bradford College next week.
Neither Bradford College or Bradford University said they could comment at this stage.

stop being so negative!!! This type of link up has been happening for a number of years now and has benefits for all. It means people leaving college have real life experience in their chosen field and the club will send some students they way of the college.
Oh and by the way, students now pay a lot of money for a university place so if they dont like it, they wont choose to go there. It isnt all public money anymore!

How can public sector organisations like the college & university justify spending public money in this way ?
I thought they were suffering major cutbacks in their budgets.
It needs private commercial sponsors to come forward not taking money out of the education budget !
I know of many projects that are of benefit to the Health of the nation.
For example Loughborough university is the hub of health and fitness for the whole UK, and sponsored by the British Heart Foundation.
York University, Huddersfield University, Carnegie college, and Leeds Uni. are all involved with sports clubs. Heart Research UK have given many grants to Rugby clubs (including Wakefield some three years ago). Personaly I am delighted!
It's about time the Bulls were also involved.
Hope that answers your question.

It's quite a common thing, I bet there are a lot of students doing sports/physio degrees who will benefit.
It also publicises the institutions.

Universities in England are currently allowed to charge home students £3,225 fees per year. This is initially paid to the university by the government, and then paid back through the tax system by students once their income reaches £15,000.
In the UK as a whole, income from fees - including fees paid directly by students such as postgraduates and overseas students - makes up about 29% of universities' total funding, which was £25.4bn in 2008/09.
Another 35% comes from government funding bodies, while the rest comes from other sources such as research grants, endowments and investments.
Schools are funded by local education authorties who gain monies from the local council........

Smokey, spouting off because his beloved Bantams, aren't getting the deal. Or more to the point he's having ago because, he's nowt better to do. Like on or two more on here and city blog, blames the council for everything.
In another story today we have a councillor saying that the taxpayer will have to make up £1m if houses aren't granted permission in Allerton. Then we have this which suggests the Uni and College can afford to sponsor the Bulls. If they can afford that (and make a £22k mace go look it up) then maybe they are getting too much mone, money that could be directed towards the £1m shortfall our councillors suggest we need as a reason for building houses in Allerton.
This has nothing to do with anything else.

Smokey, just go back to posting about this on the news blog. You're even trying to start an argument on that site as well. I fail to see why you don't make your feelings known to your local councillor. Instead of coming on here moaning.
Why do you have a us and them attitude. Personally I would like to see sport in Bradford flourish and I would like to see Bradford be a great place to live. Unfortunately those running these things in the recent past have made a right hash of it all and we have a City center which has more empty shops than filled ones, illegal markets popping up, buildings left deralict for year on years and massive holes. The nightlife is non existant and the only thing that seem to happen regularly is anti american protests led by our newest MP.
Our sports clubs are racking up administrations faster than points and not one person has been held accountable for any of the above.
Appart from that all is rosey.

Colleges, Universities, Schools in the City of Bradford get back everything they put into the community by educating kids and students to be good citizens and professional people in what will be their chosen professions.
What better values can they be taught, than Health-Fitness-Sport
s Science relating to Cardiovascular and Heart health plus exercise and training physiology and physiotherapy on bodies that actually belong to first class living athletes.....the list is endless.
Remember: Quid Pro Quo.

My arguement from the start and still is that a councillor says that taxpayers will have to foot the bill if they don't give planning permission to build over 250 houses.
I'm not saying it's not a good idea, my who argument has been on the basis you can't have one councillor cry the poor tale expecting taxpayers to foot the bill in one hand then have an elected MP from the same party negotiate a sponsorship deal with a college that recently got handed a significant grant from Bradford council on the other.

All the talk from some on here is just that talk. Idiots who post on here just to slack the club off whats the point ? Omar has gone into this venture without the hope of making millions or becoming an empire he is a genuine bloke who is trying to help the club & the city. Bbibby why not be constructive or if not just be quiet.
