Residents in Wyke call for Bradford Council to take action over rats
11:00am Thursday 11th October 2012 in News
Dereck and Linda Paul outside their home
“Petrified” residents are calling for Bradford Council to remove a rat infestation that has plagued homes in Wyke.
A number of rats have been spotted by locals, with some so terrified that they have been forced to stay indoors.
Residents believe workers in the area have damaged a sewer and have disturbed the rats.
Concerns have been raised by a number of people who have contacted the Council.
Linda Paul, 65, of Winterton Drive, said: “My neighbour across the road is too frightened to even open the door. I’m not happy about it and there have been quite a few people in the area who have seen them. Some have even seen them by the main road.
“So far I’ve seen about five and we rang the Council on Monday. It’s a big problem and we need something doing soon.”
Linda’s husband Dereck, 65, has raised concerns for people in the area having come into contact with the rodents himself.
He said: “There was a really large one that we found dead on our drive, but there was another that I spotted in the garden going behind the greenhouse. One of the neighbours managed to kill one with an air rifle.
“It’s worrying how many people have seen them because there is a food production plant and other businesses nearby.”
Scott Stark, 36, of Worsnop Gardens, believes the Council needs to respond immediately with the area exposed to a risk of disease.
He said: “I’ve spoken to some residents who are petrified, with some considering whether to move out of their homes. The Council said that someone will take a look at it in the next three to five working days.”
Bradford Council environmental health manager, Carol Morgan, has been made aware of the infestation of land at Storr Hill. She said: “We treat all vermin infestations and other public health risks extremely seriously and at present we are trying to establish who owns the land so we can inform the landowner of their responsibility to rectify the problem.
“If the landowner does not take action within a reasonable time, Bradford Council has the power to get rid of the rats and charge the landowner for the costs incurred.”

'About' 5, so is that 4 really? all together, or maybe the same one 4 different times?
Buy some rat bait & traps, job done 'till the next ones move in.
Rats are everywhere, they always have been & always will be.
Latest figures reckon there's 1.2 rats for every human in the UK.

Rats are everywhere , especially more so where there are humans. Its just a part of living in a built up area and upto the householder to control. If the source is someone elses property then get on to them as i,m sure its not the councils responsibility unless tyhey are the source.

Many people (presumably from elsewhere) often park up to eat their McDonald's muck then sling their left-overs/packaging out of the car window before driving off. Others who do live in the area habitually throw litter everywhere, even though there's no shortage of bins round here. I've also seen rats in broad daylight outside Bradford College, large as life, totally un-deterred by the presence of humans, and in fact, all over Bradford. There must be literally millions of rats here.

When I rang up to request they do something about it, I was asked if I fed the local bird life, when I said yes, why? The woman on the phone told me to stop & remove my feeders, as that is what attracts the rats.....
I didn't go to the T&A to get my miserable face in print, I spent a fiver & bought a load of rat poison & chucked the blocks over my hedge into the spare ground.
After a couple of days I stopped seeing rats & have only seen a couple since then...... and I still feed the birds.
As someone says further up, rats are everywhere, you just don't normally see them as they're mainly nocturnal.

Cats won't eat it, & dogs can't get in there.
The only wildlife that might chew on it are tree rats......squirrels, & they're vermin anyway. I catch them in a live trap and chuck 'em in the water butt.

The rats love the remnants of take-aways discarded all over the village by thoughtless in-breds who generally have had no peer education to do with litter control.
My new neighbours and their children think its normal to chuck various fast food wrappers from their car before going back into the house and settling down for another afternoon on the play station!
I'm hoping they cant afford the rent much longer and will have to go back to the sewer they crawled from!
