Sainsbury’s deny it is involved as developer suggests store on Baildon car park

Businesses and councillors in Baildon have united in strong opposition to proposals to build a large convenience store on a car park in the centre of the village.

Traders claim the proposed convenience store on part of the Bradford Council-owned Ian Clough Hall car park may be “another nail in the coffin” for independent businesses in Baildon and would lead to an unacceptable loss of car parking.

Baildon councillors said they had been approached by Leeds-based Landmark Developments, which they said had expressed an interest in building a Sainsbury’s store on the car park, although a planning application had not been submitted and the chain last night denied all knowledge of the plan.

However, Councillor Val Townend said: “My ward colleagues and I are completely opposed to this proposal which is not needed in Baildon and which would be of detriment to the town centre. I can see why the proposal would appeal to both the developer and also the store but I can see little benefit to Baildon residents.”

Matthew Wildman, chairman of the Baildon Businesses Social Group said car parking was already very limited and any loss of space would prove an “extremely emotive issue” for traders.

The car park is also used for a monthly farmers’ market, launched last month by the parish council and Baildon Belles Women’s Institute.

Baildon Belles president Sara Mogford said: “I would be horrified if they were to build on the car park. It would be slightly ironic as it is would be on the site of the farmers’ market.

“We have put in so much hard work to get people to shop locally and buy local produce and Sainsbury’s are not exactly local. I really do think that everybody will be appalled by this.”

Peter Gaston, owner of Browgate Pharmacy, said: “The village is already congested and we are struggling for parking as it is. Also, the idea should be to encourage smaller businesses in the village to thrive. Another supermarket would be another nail in the coffin.”

Coun Townend said: “We already have enough retail outlets and a Sainsbury’s store at this location would compete with them whilst occupying a part of the car park which serves these existing shops.

“Whilst the Council have said to us that they have no active plans to sell the land, I find it hard to believe that the developer would invest the time and money required to work up their proposals to the stage that they have, without ascertaining that there was at least a possibility of it being available to them.”

Richard Morton, a director of Landmark Development Projects, said there had been “preliminary discussions” with Councillors but said any application or offer for the land was “a long way off”.

How about asking a few shoppers whether they would like it?

Albion, done that. And I've yet to meet anyone who wants this. There's a large Co-op 300 hundreds yards from the proposed site of new store and that store is sufficient for the village and co-exists with a number of succesful and highly regarded local businesses.

I know the "over priced" CO-OP very well, It's still a bit of a trip for many people to do a weekly shop, although I find the suggested site of this proposal rather surprising.
My original post was aimed at the reporter but thanks for your comment.

The co-op is slightly high price but it is hardly a trip for people as it is in the centre of the village. It is convenient, which is handy as it is a convenience store.

Also the co-op has some morals - not so sure about sainsbury's.

I hope that if sainsbury's are planning the store and are reading this, they will re-consider.

The "trip" that I mentioned, was to somewhere with more realistic stock levels and prices.
I no longer live in Baildon but certainly wouldn't do the bulk of my shopping there, even if I am a Co-operative member and bank with them.
I can't see this happening because of the site mentioned anyway.

Would prefer to see Sainsbury's in Baildon rather than the Co-op - their prices are crazy ! So much for the "ethical" stance -it's clearly a front for higher prices.

I wonder how many Baildon residents trog down to the Tesco for more affordable prices ?

At end of day it would be impractical to build on Ian Clough car park - just kite flying if you ask me.

Sainsburys shouldn't be allowed to build anything else in Bradford councils area until they commit to a date to start building the Bingley store or sell the land on, at a reasonable price, to somebody who will.

Buying land to prevent anybody else developing it might be a good corporate strategy but it doesn't help with the development of Bingley.

I never shop in tesco because of their eithics to be honest - I don't think that tesco was needed either.

HAHA this is the most stupidest idea I've seen yet.... Erm.. Earth to morons... Theres NO ROOM!!! :D

Baildon is a historic village, we have a Co-op... And hellooooo, even if they did build it, they'll be no parking spaces for it and it means no parking for Ian Clough Hall, the library or the Church - why you ask? Coz you've just built on them you imps!!... Also we have 5 supermarkets within a 5 mile radius, I'm pretty sure Baildoners do not want it! :D

I am personally going to start an online petition for those in Baildon to have this idea scrapped for good. It shouldn't have even gone to the discussion stage as it is not feesable or practical..... :)

These big supermarket destroy local trade completely. I would encourage people of baildon to fight any proposal for this development.

Support your local businesses.

Well it turned out to be a lot of hot air, supposedly (and this is second hand so don't sue me) a conservative councillor heard the rumour, reported it to the T&A as fact, and off goes the rumour mill.

Scaremongering.

Soapboxes may now be dismounted people.
