Bradford taxi firm boss speaks out over rise in insurance costs
11:00am Monday 1st October 2012 in News
Khurram Shehzad fears for the future of his taxi business
A cab driver boss fears taxi firms will be driven out of Bradford if insurance companies insist on keeping their premiums sky high.
Khurram Shehzad, who runs Manchester Road Taxis, said he has had to reduce his fleet of cars to five from 13 because he cannot afford the insurance premiums, which have risen from £1,800 per car per year in 2011 to £3,500 per car this year.
He fears he will have to move elsewhere if premiums keep going up.
“False whiplash and fraudulent claims are affecting the innocent people that are out there trying to earn a livelihood for themselves and their family,” he said.
“It has come to a stage now where drivers are registering in other boroughs, which is giving them an average saving of 60 per cent on insurance costs.”
Mr Shehzad said his problems started when a passenger claimed on his policy, causing his premiums to nearly double.
“I am going to eventually be left with no alternative but to sell my vehicles,” he said. “It is easy for an insurance company to say ‘no quote’, but what about the drivers that are going to go off the road?
“A number of drivers I know are out of work and have had to go to the job centre looking for other sources of work and this is hard for them, as they do not have a wide variety of skills as driving is all they have known.
“Unless something is done to change the way licensing is carried out it will mean a number of drivers losing their livelihoods.”
Bradford East MP David Ward (Lib Dem) said: “The good news is we are making progress.
“The spiral of ever-increasing premiums was out of control, but I do think we are managing to control it now. The spiral has been broken with us tackling referral fees and legal costs.
“We are also successfully dealing with uninsured drivers, but the most important thing is that the Government, mainly through pressure from the Transport Select Committee, is doing something and taking it seriously.
“We now have a fraud unit and last June, a change in the law saw insurers link up with the DVLA to look at uninsured drivers. Things are heading in the right direction, but we need to see premiums keep coming down, not increasing.”
Councillor Ralph Berry, (Lab, Wibsey) who has been contacted by Mr Shehzad, said: “I believe there is a serious problem in the way the insurance market is working and treating Bradford.
“This needs to be tackled by Parliament as I believe the impact is damaging to the city.”

Having seen the standard of driving amongst the taxi community, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the rise is down to higher than average accidents and penalty points for speeding.

Strangely the insurance company then got in touch with my friend stating the driver and three passengers all had been injured, needed Physio and claimed for expenses.
The guy in this article needs to look at his own profession as it is mainly them that are pushing up premiums with their insurance fraud and driving literally like lunatics

Motor Insurance is a complete rip-off. The Government should set up a State-run insurance scheme that is not-for-profit, and take the business out of the hands of the greed-driven companies that currently profit from something that is a legal requirement.

Car insurance is high because of the above problems, not because of the companies. If the city was such a lawless enclave of ne'er-do-wells, insurance would be affordable for everyone.

Only yesterday I was queueing up to Saltaire roundabout as you usually do in the right hand lane to go towards Bingley and some idiot decided to drive from Village Estates up to the roundabout up on the kerb making pedestrians move out of the way just to get to the roundabout quicker..then go right which isnt allowed.

If this is the case, I hope the council's licensing department are checking the insurance documents of the city's taxi drivers.
The more I read about the taxi industry, the less inclined I am to use them.

It all boils down to a lack of care about Bradford altogether IMO. We were slowly drifting into third world conditions, now we are speeding towards them. Child poverty, unemployment, lack of facilities and more cuts to come. Bradford Council Licensing Office won't be able to do a thing about any of this as they will be one man and a rubber stamp, giving carte blanche to any one with no checks. As has recently been senn when drivers with sex and violence convictions have been valiated.

They obviously make their money on other types of insurance with lower claims costs or from the investment potential of the premiums they collect.
Car premiums are expensive however that's not quite the same thing as a rip off.

4 - They infact earn more than the average person thats works and pays 3 - 4k tax a year. They hardly pay any tax, lie about how much they make to obtain further benefits and have the guts to come out and say that insurance is too high!!!!
Taxi drivers you dont pay anything into government tax pot and steal from that pot by lying about income and then moan at the government to reduce your insurance!!

When it comes to speeding in Bradford, it's easier to count the number of vehicles that DO stick to the speed limits! I've seen drivers do in excess of 40mph on 20mph limit roads!
And how many times have there been when you are doing 30mph with a car 200m behind you then 2 seconds later they are on your bumper?
Again the punishment for driving uninsured is only £250, 10% of what some pay in premiums! It's really is cost effective for them to take the points and get this "fine"; and we know these people most likely already have a criminal record, so they wont care if they more charges.
Increase the fine to $5000 minimum, WITH jail time, and we'll see what happens.

Around where I live BD18 the "bigger" houses often worth around the £180k mark and nicely done out have taxi's in their drives. Speaking to any taxi driver they always seem to tell you that there is no money on it nowadays yet judging by their houses and other cars not to mention size of their families I would hazard a guess they are lying

For the record the top 1% of of the high earners in this country pay 27% of the whole tax income
Without the rich and high earners this country would be literally broke
Take David Harding for example. As England's highest earner with a salary of £84m a year he pays £34m in tax on this amount.
Yes I agree some will dodge it but high earners dodging tax are no worse than joe public doing jobs cash in hand for example. Both are cheating the system

They are able to expertly push in onto the road at junctions to rush to their jobs and boast about being able to do 6-7 jobs in an hour!! Also they only declare 16 hours and claim the full wack on benefits. If you look around, the big houses around Bradford will have a battered taxi on the drive! They can afford the increase, its the customers best interests that should be at heart, not the drivers.I absolutely agree with you. Spot on my friend.

You can't blame people for trying to get cheaper insurance buy using someone else's address as its not only the Taxi drivers that pay high rates of insurance but joe soap, but is it legal as I don't think it is, also I was under the impression that taxi drivers pay their own insurance and not the company that they work for, as its not just the cars that are insured but the driver! and the driver of the taxi pay a sum to use the base for radio purposes and company slogan.
