A major fire has ripped through a takeaway restaurant near the centre of Bradford.

The entire Uncle B’s pizza and fish and chip shop on Great Horton Road, Shearbridge next to Bradford University was caught up in the blaze at about 2.25pm.

Eyewitnesses reported flames shooting out of the roof of the restaurant as firefighters battled to stop the blaze spreading to other shops in the small commercial area.

It is understood no-one was injured in the fire, which needed crews from Bradford and Odsal stations to bring it under control with four engines and aerial equipment.

Last night it was believed the fire had been contained within Uncle B’s, despite the roof being destroyed and substantial damage, although some people reported damage to the Subway store next door.

One woman, who did not want to be named but works nearby, said there was a “whoosh” as flames engulfed Uncle B’s.

“We just got out,” she said.

“The flames were just coming up through the roof. We don’t know what started it but it could have been a cooker or something.”

She said she did not believe the fire had spread, but firefighters told her they were working to make sure the blaze did not affect other buildings.

Smoke was visible from the fire across the city and officers from West Yorkshire Police cordoned off several roads, including Great Horton Road, as firefighters battled the blaze.

A report from the West Yorkshire Fire Service said “100 per cent” of Uncle B’s was involved in the fire and “specialist officers” had been called in to help tackle the incident.

More witnesses took to Twitter to express their dismay and post pictures of the blaze. Sefyan Abdulmula wrote: “Hope to see you up and running again soon Uncle B’s”.
