Applicants are outstripping the number of jobs available at a new supermarket in Bradford by more than four to one.

Supermarket giant Asda is due to bring 253 new jobs into the city when it opens a 38,000 square-foot store in Bradbeck Road, off Cemetery Road, Lidget Green , on November 19.

But following a report of the opening in the Telegraph & Argus on Monday, the store had received 1,036 applications to fill those positions.

General store manager Barkat Ali said: “We have been overwhelmed with the number of job applications we’ve received since the opening of the new Asda in Bradford was announced.

“Being from the local area, I am delighted that we are creating 253 jobs for local people and I can’t wait to get the full team in place and ready to launch the store on November 19 at 10am.”

The 24-hour store will incorporate a George department, a café, a pharmacy and a petrol filling station.

On Monday, the T&A reported how a community leader had welcomed the new jobs created at the store, but warned it could create traffic problems.

Ward Councillor John Godward (Labour, Great Horton ) said the number of jobs was “the one positive aspect of the development”.

He said: “It’s a matter of the problems it’s going to create with the traffic coming through Lidget Green.”

Joining Mr Ali in managing the store will be Craig Watson, who has been chosen as the store’s community life champion.

One of Mr Watson’s first challenges will be to launch the Chosen by You, Given by Us initiative in which three local organisations will be voted for by customers to receive support from the new store.

To nominate your organisations or charity, contact Craig at Community_Bradford@asda.co.uk.

Wow, what a shockingly low number of applications. How many unemployed people are there in Bradford?
.
What on earth is a Community Life Champion?
.
Suggests to me businesses are in the drivers seat in our country and not our government/politicia
ns - very eerie.

Yes, a low number of applicants.

The T & A reported on 23 April 2009 that 2500 applied for the 300 posts available at the then new Asda store in Keighley.

On 14 September 2006, during the planning process fears were raised about the traffic "chaos" that would ensue.

Those fears were completely unfounded as the development has not significantly contributed to the existing busy traffic situation.

The plan for the Lidget Green store includes similar traffic control measures and if these are phased in with the lights at Farmers Boy/Duncombe Road junction there should be no significant problems.

"Community Life Champion" seems to be Asdaspeak for Volunteer Fundraiser.

I'd Like to see the retail impact assessment to local businesses submitted to the council by Asda when they applied for planning.

Asda is what you call REAL retail impact to local businesses, these lot want to sell everything. mind you it won't affect White abbey Rd and Bombay stores so it doesn't matter.

Just looking at the Asda staff oops sorry er, colleague, website (Google Asda Greenroom).

They have an award that's called a "Golden Cone" which seems to be a traffic cone coloured gold where it would normally be red. This is for staff sorry colleagues to nominate each other for exceptional work above and beyond etc. What it doesn't say is what you do with it. My first thought is that it would save you a parking place for a short period but I'd be interested to know exactly what the benefits are.

I think its great news 253 new jobs in Lidget Green/Manningham/Gir
lington about time some inward investment came to this part of Bradford.
Also right that most of the jobs should be going to the local people looking for jobs rather than people coming in from Bingley, Baildon and Ilkley to work in the inner city.

Lets hope a number of the jobs are traffic diverters!

Most likely the job centre told as many as possible to apply (even though many of them wouldn't be successful), hence they high number of applicants.

The OP was commenting on how FEW applicants there were compared to the number of jobless in Bradford.

In August 2012 there were 20,056 Jobseekers Allowance claimants in Bradford (investinbradford.co
m) and therefore only some 5% applied.

In Feb 2012 there were *1345 jobseekers in Bradford University ward which is Lidget Green and surrounding areas, seems quite a few of the local unemployed applied

(*Feb 2012 figuresThe Office for National Statistics (ONS) Labour Market Statistics Bulletin (table 25) and on the DWP website at http://83.244.183.18

Not everyone is looking for Retail work, and not everyone has Retail experience, nor do they all live in or near Lidget Green.

ASDA is owned by an American company called Walmart who have no morals whatsoever, and are notoriously anti-Union. With the possible exception of McDonald's it's the last place on earth I'd want to work. If you're unfortunate enough to work at ASDA then for God's sake JOIN A UNION !!!

Why do they have to live in Lidget Green?

I'd have thought that given the circumstances these days that ANY job was worth applying for.

Do Asda say retail experience is essential?

Lotuslover assumes that locals have applied, but can offer no evidence to support that assertion.

Whenever i see any jobs advertised with Asda in the area there is hardly ever anything more than 15 hours per week.
Mainly its 10 hrs here, 12 hrs there and so on.

Correct, and thanks for pointing that out. Try tell that to my hopelessly optimistic (ie. brainwashed) Work Coach.

Because if you live further afield it is not economically viable to travel in order to do only 15 hours per week at min. wage (or little more). That's why. Do you see now?

Walruss says...

Nothing had been said about a 15 hour week when I made that comment.

If that's correct then of course I accept it.

What about answers to my other two questions, just in case full time employment is available?

I agree Asda are renowned for exploiting staff.
They also expect too much from prospective applicants in terms of inter personal skills compared to the jobs, hours and wages they offer
