George Galloway and Philip Davies call for immediate withdrawal

MP George Galloway MP George Galloway

Bradford MPs are divided on when troops should come home from Afghanistan – with two demanding they all return before Christmas.

Bradford West Respect MP George Galloway has tabled a Commons motion calling on the Government to withdraw British forces immediately with all military home within months.

Britain is withdrawing 500 troops by the end of this year, leaving 9,000. The UK plans for British troops to end their combat role by the end of 2014.

Mr Galloway's call would see servicemen and women back home in less than 100 days, a demand supported by Shipley Tory MP Philip Davies.

“I agree with George on this,” he said. “I never supported the war in Afghanistan. I believe we are ignoring history and you do that at your peril.

“No one ever makes a success of going into Afghanistan. All that happens is that people move over the border to Pakistan to continue their activities and then come back.”

The call comes days after married father-of-two Sgt Gareth Thursby, from Skipton , and Private Thomas Wroe, 18, were shot dead in the south of Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, on Saturday. They both served in 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of Wellington's) and were killed at a checkpoint when a man dressed as a local Afghan policeman pretended to be injured so they would help him.

Other Bradford MPs support a phased withdrawal and say leaving now would be an “insult” to our fallen soldiers.

Keighley and Ilkley Tory MP Kris Hopkins said: “Our service personnel are doing incredibly important work in Afghanistan to protect us all from the continuing threat from global terrorism. The Prime Minister has made clear that the UK's combat role will cease in 2014. Before then, it is vital that our troops complete the task of training the Afghan national security forces so that they can take over the burden as we withdraw.

“To pull out now would be an insult to the memories and legacies of the brave servicemen and women we have lost.”

Bradford South Labour MP Gerry Sutcliffe said: “I support the phased withdrawal and return of our troops from Afghanistan. We are all concerned about the loss of life on all sides of the Commons but we have to make sure the exit is done properly.”

Bradford East Lib Dem MP David Ward branded Mr Galloway's call “gesture politics”.

He said: “We all know we have a commitment to withdraw troops and it needs to be as soon as possible, but organised. The withdrawal should not be brought about in response from a demand to hit the headlines again.”

What does Galloway propose happens in Afghanistan if the UN leave?

The Taliban will be back in charge and most of the Afghan public will be back to the fear they used to have. Or is Galloway only interested in the interests of Muslim women who can help get him into parliament?

Myself, I think that we have wasted too many lives in Afganistan. Not only are we fighting a very devious enemy but as is stated in the article, it is obvious that the Taliban are being supported from Pakistan, and in some ways by the Pakistan government itself.
If the USA wants to continue their involvement, that's up to them but I don't feel it iwould be an insult to the memories of our fallen troops in any way at all.
To continue this deplorable waste of fine British servicemen WOULD be an insult.

Why do you think so many countries are so desperate to occupy Afghanistan ?
Do you think they want the sand ?
Or the Lithium deposits in the mountains ?
Or perhaps they are genuinely spending millions a day to improve people lives who hate our guts ? And who could blame them.

The lithium stuff is urban myth, it's quite easy to extract - Chile, Argentina and Australia are large producers. Why would anyone go to Afghanistan when it's so easy to get at in stable countries?

Far be it for me to agree with Galloway but I do. However, I tend to think that with his deep rooted interest in Middle Eastern and Islamic causes his interests lay more in the protection of his Islamic brothers than British servicemens lives. I think Afghanistan is a lots cause. We're supposed to be helping people who don't want our help. Let's forget the oil and mineral deposits there. We're the Taliban to be in control for another hundred years they would neither have the motivation or the gumption to know hw to extract it to improve their nations wealth. The Taliban have bombed and murdered non Muslims and ancient Bhuddist monuments and structures since gaining a foothold in the country. You can influence and change the power structure in Kabul but you can't change the deep rooted hatred and intolerance that really festers inside these people's minds. Let's leave this evil country at our earliest convenience and leave them to sort their own problems out. I for one know when I'm not wanted.

I'll echo that, Galloway's motivations are nothing to do with thoughts for British troops or loss of life among them. Galloway is little more than an anti Western rabble rouser working amongst Muslims in this country to foster sectarian politics which he can then live off. It's how he got elected in Bethnal Green & his election literature shows it's exactly what he did to get in Bradford West

if you ever get chance visit the church inside Sandhurst College. OPEN DAY IS AROUND FATHER'S DAY EACH YEAR

There is a beautiful stained glass window in remembrance to our fallen heroes in Afghanistan in the late 19th century.

George Galloway wants our troops to leave so he can claim victory for the Taliban over the non believers. I bet he will have a victory party with his voters.

The decent folks of Bradford West are now finding out that the odious Galloway has interests far removed from the real people of Bradford. Our interests reside within the city and surrounding areas, ones that affect our environment and impact upon our daily lives. Galloway is perfectly entitled to his views and opinions regarding the issues around Palenstine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and others. I just don't want my MP banging on mercilessly about issues affecting nations thousands of miles away from Bradford. As an elected MP his interests should be first and foremost the representation of the good folks of Bradford. His YouTube and press TV exploits prove without doubt that his interests lie elsewhere. I'm sure the people of Bradford will see through him at the next election and vote for an individual who will truly have his heart in the city and not exploit the people's religious and nationalistic ties for his own self promotion.

CHINA.

It gives the west a launch pad and base a lot closer to the Chinese border than many other occupied territories for one reason.

I think we should pull out all the troops, ring our own perimeter, shut our own gates and borders, limit families to two state supported children, over and above two you pay all costs, education, medical etc. The time of the social state for all must begin to end, full contributions in or minimal out.

Back in the mists of time, I recall a certain Tony Blair insisting that (along with the threat of non-existent wmd's) we were in Iraq to protect our borders and to establish open and fair elections. I believe we are now told we are in Afghanistan for the same reasons.
No matter what we do, it is in the psychology of these people to kill one another to get their own way. We are never going to change that (read Tyker2's post).
If we do need to defend our borders, bringing the troops home will have the following benefits.
If we are not in their country, they have one less reason for committing terrorist atrocities here.
Bring home the troops will save millions of pounds.
More importantly bringing home the troops will save many lives.
Use the troops to defend our borders here.

SPOT ON!!

Blair onwards have spent trillions on these lost causes. Why?Political bravado and showing the world we are strong. are being cited. Wrong wrong.

Absolute rubbish is spouted by politicians at the helm and close by.

bring the troops home and defend our borders properly from within and use these troops to stop illegals wherever they try to get in

Bring all troops home, protect from within.

THAT WAY NO MORE CARD BOARD BOXES BRINGING HOME OUR DEAD YOUNG LADS MANY OF WHOM HAVE YOUNG FAMILIES.

Cameron should have the guts to bring all troops home immediately.
