Plea for food aid as child poverty soars in Bradford

A charity helping to feed poverty-stricken families is making a desperate appeal for food donations as it is revealed that more than 37,000 youngsters in Bradford are now living below the breadline.
Last month Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank handed out 308 parcels – the most since it started in 2004 and more than six times the monthly amount handed out two years ago.
And schools in some areas of the district worst affected by poverty are now holding cookery lessons on a Friday so pupils have a meal to take home with them.
Councillor Ralph Berry , the executive member on Bradford Council for children’s services, illustrated the divide across Council wards with 68 per cent of children living in poverty in Bowling and Barkerend compared to one per cent in Ilkley .
He said the Child Poverty Board, set up three years ago and of which he is chairman, was tackling issues around deprivation and the impact of welfare reforms. He said: “The situation outrages me when we see policies making the wealthy wealthier. Schools are ensuring children have enough carbohydrates and are ensuring they take part in cooking-related activities so they can take meals home on a Friday.
“Some 1,800 children will also be affected by families having to move to smaller properties because of benefit cuts. We are extremely concerned about this. Many of those in poverty are also affected by changes to Working Tax Credits.”
Bradford Food Bank is appealing to supermarkets and the public to help keep it supplied to enable it to respond to requests for help from the Probation Service, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and housing associations.
Ken Leach, its co-ordinator, said: “We are desperate for donations because the amount of parcels has gone up so much. 308 is the highest it has ever been – three years ago we were giving out 40 to 50 parcels a month. People are struggling and benefits are being cut and unemployment is very high and people just haven’t got the money.
“I wish we did not need a food bank but the reality is people are hungry and there are people out there who need feeding.
“We rely on donations to survive and are hoping that the Harvest Festival season will result in a lot of donations from lots of schools and churches.”
Alex Bohdanowicz, of Bradford & Airedale Citizens Advice Bureau, said that although it was predominantly an advice centre, it had been handing out parcels to people with nothing.
“Since April there has been a reduction in entitlement to Working Tax Credits and reduction in the amount of housing benefit people are entitled to,” she said. “It saddens me that we are living in a society where people on the lowest income who are working or unable to work are struggling to survive. We give out food parcels every week and our advice centre is an advice centre, not a food bank.
“We have been coming across people who have no food much more commonly in the last couple of years.”

Another story in the T A states a lady on benefits could afford to save for a Butlins holiday for her and her family!
I think there may be a big problem in budget management with the benefits being received by those struggling.
I believe the majority of benefits should be paid out in vouchers for food housing travel etc, minimising mis spending.

On sale in all the supermarkets are a wide variety of basic range tinned, packet and fresh fruit food which are extremely cheap priced and probably subsidised by shoppers who buy more expensively priced food. These foods are excellent quality - have tried and use them myself. There is simply no reason why any child or person should go hungry.
.
To the charities I say please help these people to understand what they can and can't afford and how to keep warm without cranking up the heating etc.

Even on JSA and say on £20 a week left over from bills that is enough to feed kids for a week if you take some time out to cook and plan meals.
The simple thing here is the parents cant be bothered and as such and their mentality is "someone else will sort it"

Is Councillor Berry for real - he is comparing the people who live in Barkerend and West Bowling (allegedly 37%) to the people (apparently 1%) who live in Ilkley. Perhaps it should be pointed out that the majority of people who live in Ilkley took the trouble to be educated and probably have decent jobs. It would appear that parents of these children in poverty should be educated on how to spend their benefits more wisely, surely that would take the children out of poverty.

People talk about it been a lifestyle choice? Who in there right mind would want to live on £70 pound a week. Don't have a go at people who have nothing and have been let down time after time. What happened to education education education, were now one of the most declining country's in the world statisticly. The way were govened Doesn't work.
Im sick to death of people blaming the ecomony, government, bankers, councils, benefits system, teachers, social workers etc etc etc rather than looking to themselves to sort out their own lives.
It really is that simple that some people nowadays want to be led through life with their hands held and be told "there there everything will be ok".
For gods sake just take responsibility for your own lives, look after the children you have contribute to society and make the best out of life both for children and yourselves.

What can they do if they have lost their job or been made redundant and they cant receive any money for a month.
We can not let anyone starve it would be criminal in this day and age that working AND non working are put in this position of starving. It also takes a month if there are any changes to a claim of tax credits etc. and in that time the person(s)could starve. Proud people will be too ashamed to admit they have reached this point so will just suffer in silence and go hungry. As for sky TV comments etc.. they can not pay the bills and are disconnected. No one would chose TV etc. over feeding their kids but you never know when you will lose your job.

I think one of the problems is people having to wait over a month for benefits to be processed. In that time a person could starve to death. These benefits are not just for non workers they also include workers on minimum wage topped up by benefits. What can they do if they have lost their job or been made redundant and they cant receive any money for a month. I can understand the frustration but what do you expect them to do? they cannot process and pay every single claim on the day received as this is completely unworkable besides and say for example you lost your job today and the last time you got paid was the end of August then you would still have that wage would you not?

From my recent trips to Bradford it seems the Asian community are doing rather well and the white inner city population are the ones that are struggling.I don't feel it is racist to say that because it is true.Voting Labour or for Respect will only make things worse.The banks need to start lending again so small businesses can launch and thrive and local people can benefit.If the banks won't lend as is what is currently happening then locals cannot get up the wealth ladder as there are few jobs out there at the moment.The Asian community is less affected as they tend to lend from sharia banks and as a community are better at looking after each other so few of them end up in the poverty trap.

Mr Berry, I put it to you:- when you stop deciding whether a Father can see his children or not, and you stop playing 'God', and stop supporting organisations like CAFCASS, and other negative, opinionated organisations who are actively splitting famililes up and causing conflict, then many of these families, desperate for proper support and help, would cope.

Maybe benifets should be paid in vouchers that can only be exhanged for food.

There is a lot of poverty, but not just in Bradford. It doesnt matter if you work or not, it is still hard to make ends meet, yes you can buy and cook by bulk (I do it every month), but with the price of every day living going up it is hard. But it was stated that the worst hit is Bowling and Barkerend, but I dont see poverty there as they all have flash cars and a lot own thier houses maybe if they got rid of those they would have money for food, so I guess what he was saying is that its the ethnic minority that are living in poverty, but yet when there is a Next sale on its those said people you see buying, and no-one else (well not much) I think he needs to look at other areas as well as to me he isnt looking at Bradford on the hole.

If poverty in the City is so bad due to a lack of jobs, why are the council trying to push through thousands of more houses? Surely that would add to the problem as if there isn't enough jobs as it is, how will more people in the same area help the matter?
