Sue Brown made a winning return after a break from racing in the Stainland Seven-Miler over tough roads around Greetland.

The Baildon runner’s time of 46min 07sec was three minutes quicker than second-placed lady Sue Becconsall (Bingley ) and the host club’s Lucy Thompson.

Keighley & Craven athletes dominated the men’s race, with Willy Smith, Marco Gvero and Adrian Thomas in second, third and fifth respectively. Barnsley’s Shaun Dimelow was overall winner in 42:12, with Kevin Ogden of Spen fourth.

Bradford-Airedale’s Matt Nowell travelled to the Salford 10K , with 20th place of 1,359 finishers in 36:20 encouraging as he looks to get back to top form.

The pick of two dozen local runners of the 796 in the Wetherby 10K was Ilkley ’s Sally Malir, first in the ladies’ over-45s in 42:39.

But many local over-35s were taking part in the Yorkshire Vets Road Relays at Roberts Park, Saltaire .

A total of 235 runners from 72 teams competed over three or four three-mile legs, taking in the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool towpaths.

Bingley’s men scored second place in the over-35s behind Barnsley, with Otley third, and were third in the over-40s as Hallamshire triumphed. In the M50 category, Ilkley were best local team in third behind Sheffield and Rotherham.

Eddie Irving (Ilkley), Mick Brearley (Saltaire) and Pete Pyrah (Bingley) clocked the fastest legs of the local competitors.

Bingley were second in the M60s and won the M70s against sole rivals Wakefield.

Keighley & Craven’s women were strongest local club in the over-35s category, fourth behind Wakefield. Otley’s Karen Best ran the fastest leg from local clubs ahead of Tizz Woffenden (K&C).

Bingley’s ladies ran away with the F45 prize, with excellent legs by Sue Becconsall, Mary Green and Andrea Dennison. Baildon Runners were rewarded by an excellent turnout overall with victory in the F55s, led home by Debbie Bland, Barbara Lee and Sue Coates.

The relays marked the first county-level event organised by Eccleshill Road Runners, as part of the Saltaire Festival .

Organiser Ian Stow specifically thanked park manager Martin Bijl for helping co-ordinate the event alongside the festival activities.
