A school has married its historic roots with up-to-date technology by releasing a ground-breaking app, which features films made with its famous former pupils.
Bradford Grammar School has released the BGS Showcase app, thought to the first of its type in the UK, to mark the 350th anniversary of it being granted a Royal Charter by King Charles II in October 1662.
The interactive app features photo galleries, music pieces and slides to highlight pupils and the school.
Films made with artist David Hockney at his studio, including previously unseen footage of BGS pupils discussing his artwork with him, feature on the app, along with BBC footage of the Brownlee brothers preparing for the Olympic Games.
A film made with Olympic gold medalist Adrian Moorhouse, when he returned to the school to celebrate its pool being named after him during the 2012 Olympic year is also featured.
They form the beginning of series of film clips to be made with eminent former pupils to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the school. The next to be made will feature Sir Ken Morrison.
Marketing and development manager Marie Sugden said: “We think this is different to anything else out there because we cannot find another school that has created a standalone app in this way.
“Part of the app research showed that iPads are increasingly being used to watch longer films, football matches etc, so we felt that we should incorporate longer clips.
“It is also a great way to demonstrate to people a much more realistic view of the school than can be gained from a paper brochure.”
Head teacher Kevin Riley was also keen to create a series of film clips of former pupils to mark the 350th anniversary.
Within hours of the app going live at Apple Store it was being viewed around the world in such places as US, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and China. The app is available free of charge by searching Bradford Grammar School.

We should be proud of this school. Even though it has been branded elitist many of the old Grammar schools could give it a run for its money. BGS has provided an oasis of stability while the rest of the education system has been in turmoil with one government after another trying to impose their own political brand and churn out pupils who are apparently well qualified but incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together. Long may it continue to thrive and judging by the antics of Michael Gove, it will.
