City’s Pop Idol star joins the Osmonds for Seventies show
Gareth Gates is to make his debut on a Bradford stage, starring with the Osmonds in a Seventies-inspired concert.
Tickets have gone on sale for the remixed concert version of the show Boogie Nights, set in a provincial British town at the height of disco fever.
The show features 1970s floor-fillers including YMCA, We Are Family, Boogie Wonderland and Osmonds hits Crazy Horses and Love Me For A Reason, against a backdrop of video footage from the decade.
Gareth, who shot to fame as runner-up on Pop Idol in 2002, plays heart-throb Dean and will perform dance anthems such as Disco Inferno, his own hit Spirit In The Sky and a cover of Donny Osmond’s Puppy Love.
He said: “I’m really excited about getting back on stage to sing all the hits from this era, as a lot of the tracks are personal favourites of mine. It’s going to be a fantastic show.”
Gareth joins Jay, Jimmy and Merrill Osmond – who were in Bradford for the Osmonds farewell tour earlier this year – EastEnders actresss Louisa Lytton, former X Factor contestants Andy Abraham and Chico, and Shane Richie Junior, the son of Shane Richie and Coleen Nolan. He plays bad boy Roddy, the lead role created by his father, who co-wrote Boogie Nights.
Over recent years, Gareth has moved into musical theatre, appearing in shows such as Les Miserables and Loserville. He is currently touring in Legally Blonde.
In May he was to star in 1960s hippie musical Hair at the Alhambra , but the UK tour was cancelled.
Last year the former Bradford Cathedral choirboy set up a performing arts project at his old school, Dixons City Academy . He teamed up with musical theatre star Jonathan Wilkes to launch the Gates&Wilkes Academy.
- Boogie Nights The 70s Musical is at St George’s Hall on Friday, March 22, 2013. Tickets are on (01274) 432000.
