Work to upgrade railway line could see airport train line link built

Plans for a railway station at Leeds Bradford Airport could be boosted by the latest efforts to upgrade rail services.

Network Rail is currently carrying out about £16m of work on the Harrogate Line, which runs from Leeds to Harrogate, which is due to finish later this year.

Meanwhile, campaigners are making strong calls for the whole line to be electrified in a similar way to the successful electrification of the Airedale and Wharfedale routes to Skipton and Ilkley .

And transport bosses are hoping a successful electrification could pave the way for a new station at the airport – potentially making it more accessible to millions of people.

This week, members of LBA’s Airport Consultative Committee, will meet to hear the latest developments from Brian Dunsby, the chief executive of the Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce, which has been leading the calls for improvements on the Harrogate line.

Earlier this year, he told the committee electrification is a “realistic and distinct possibility” and on Thursday he is expected to say developments are continuing.

Last night Mr Dunsby said all the pieces are in place for electrification, but the funding has still to be sorted.

“The Department of Transport has said yes in theory, but has told us to go back and work out the costs and benefits,” he said.

Mr Dunsby said plans for a Leeds Bradford Parkway Station are being regarded as a top priority, although he admitted it could be some way off.

“It would be ideal to build on the existing line at a 15-minute frequency and a 15 minutes journey time from Leeds,” he said.

“It could link to the airport’s long-stay car park and perhaps have a shuttle like the ones they have at Gatwick.”

Earlier this year, the West Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority backed the plans for a full Harrogate line electrification and airport station, while Bradford Council’s strategic director for regeneration and culture, Barra Mac Ruairi, said he would like to see a tram/train or heavy rail link from Bradford to LBA to “ensure that the district would not suffer an economic disadvantage by the provision of a fixed link from the airport to Leeds only”.

this is a great idea and will no doubt further increase the popularity of the airport.

however i note the story on the vile football hooligans who rampaged through the city and then received strangely, but not unexpectedly, lenient sentances, is not open to comments. I bet their devestated with hteir football match bans.

shame on the t&a, what a thoroughly misleading title "Football_hooligans_
clashed_with_Asian_m
en"

shouldnt that read "racist football thugs attack asian shoppers"

the story states the hooligans marched into town and attacked three asian men in a rover and then proceeded to march through attacking and racially abusing asians.

absolutely disgusting sentances and t&a coverage, i will be writing to the IPCC and my MP and urge others to do the same.

This was NOT a "clash between white and asian youths" - the victims were in town shopping and the perpetrators were football hooligans who marched into town, no where near the match venue!

Leeds/Bradford Airport remain tight-lipped about the high incidence of UFOs invading their airspace. Makes you wonder how safe it is to fly from there. Care to comment LBA ?

Just how many aliases are you using today?
With regard to the railway, there are already buses running to the Airport from several different places, they don't seem to be particularly overused, not that I'm against the plans.

I found the Busses to be from here just a Bradford to Yeadon housing estate bus that continues to LBA.
No room for cases as racks occupied by folding prams.
Bus came 25 minutes after time in timetable at bus stop driver said he was on time with HIS timetable, fortuately I was in time for my check in.
On return bus had just left so 55 mins wait for next as frequency is hourly.
For serious useage Buses need to be a 24 hour shuttle service on a direct route at 10mins frequency.

I agree, but trains won't give you that either.

why when talking about trains are we onto a scuffle in the high street?

in theory a great idea for lba but having travelled from their regularly I fear the increased footfall is beyond them. paying to drop family members off, horrendous state regarding cleaning and the slowest security procedures imaginable hardly fill me with confidence that they are capable

because thanks to the t&a poeple like you are calling it a scuffle, inncoent shoppers were attacked without cause by self confessed racist thugs, who purposefully marched into the city centre looking for people to attack, thats the point, belittling the unprovoked violence and trying to downplay is a shameful and appalling, speaks volumes when the same jump up and down about a bazaar operating without the proper licence.

So again, not a scuffle but unprovoked racist attacks in mob form that are illegal under number of offences from riot, gbh, violent disorder, racially aggraved disorder etc.

Some people still think criminial violence is a big deal.

Buses from Airport to Bradford are half-hourly - 737 and 747. Think buses to Leeds are too, both take far too long and I can't believe that there is only one route going into Leeds - I imagine another one going via Headingley would be popular.

Anyway, a rail link or some kind of light railway link would be nice to the airport, but I can't help thinking the airport should have never been built there in the first place. One east of Leeds on flat land nearer motorway network could be better - and it wouldn't even be difficult to access from Bradford if served by direct rail link. It'll never happen like.

Yes that is the one I have to use the 747 and it is hourly as I said in my post above.
It only becomes half hourly to LBA if you are boarding in Bradford its self.

As dreadful as this srory is I agree, what has it got to do with trains at LBIA?
