'We'll invest £6m in Odsal Stadium over three years'

Omar Khan and Gerry Sutcliffe, new owners of Bradford Bulls Omar Khan and Gerry Sutcliffe, new owners of Bradford Bulls

Bradford Bulls’ new owners have exclusively revealed plans to invest up to £6 million in Odsal Stadium over three years to turn the ground into “the Wembley of the North” – but have warned it will take time to turn the club around.

Restaurant boss Omar Khan and former Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe, who were unveiled to fans on the pitch before the side’s Super League home clash against Hull FC on Saturday, spoke of their vision of transforming the stadium into a go-to “destination” with concerts, a cafe and museum – and revealed plans for a possible groundshare with bidding rivals Bradford Park Avenue.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus after watching the side suffer its heaviest defeat of the season, Bradford South Labour MP Mr Sutcliffe said he wanted Odsal to be used “seven days a week, 52 weeks a year”.

“We want it to be a place of inspiration. A place for people to go ‘wow’.”

And Mr Khan, who is believed to have bought the club for £150,000, with a further £100,000 due in 2015, added: “Our vision is for Odsal to become a proper sporting village, and I guarantee you, in the long-term, we will achieve it.”

Mr Sutcliffe, who is honorary chairman of Mr Khan’s OK Bulls Limited, said the pair would be working with partners to achieve their dream at Odsal, with a plan to invest between £5-6 million at the site over three years.

He revealed how he and Mr Khan plan to hold talks Bradford University and Bradford College to discuss hosting sports academies, Bradford Council about using the ground’s classrooms – and say they hope to arrange a meeting with bosses at Bradford Park Avenue about sharing a ground at Odsal.

“Park Avenue was also bidding for the for club, so we know they have an interest in Odsal,” Mr Sutcliffe said.

“At the moment, nothing’s ruled in and nothing’s ruled out. We’d like to see a cafe open there every day, we want it to be a place where people visit even when there’s no match on. There’s definitely potential for a museum.

“Odsal’s within an hour of eight million people. We want to turn it into a destination.”

But the MP admitted it could take around two years to get the club back to a position of financial stability and warned “tough decisions” needed to be made.

The pair plan to hold talks with Bulls staff today and say they will make annoucements about the club’s structure soon – although its future in the top-flight is not secure.

The Rugby Football League is expected to hold a mini-round of licensing in the next week, where it will consider bids from the leading Championship clubs and Bradford as to who is best suited to being the 14th Super League club next season.

Can I ask the question of Lottery Funding. In my mind I believe that if we had a Supermarket or such on the site, we were not allowed Lottery Funding, but as a sports stadium is there any chance of this. I am not totally in the know about such things. Mrs. R Perhaps someone can tell me.

£6m would probably get us a roof, improved catering facilities and a bigger flatter pitch – It would be grand for Odsal to remain as a unique stadium, albeit with improved facilities. Lottery funding etc would be an option if the Sports village idea was back on the cards, i.e. building facilities that the whole community can benefit from and specialist sports facilities.

Wembley of the North is rather fanciful though.

I like the idea of Odsal being a venue for pop and rock concerts besides Rugby, it's a ideal location with motorway connections next door and a new railway station at Low Moor in the pipeline. Can't see Park Avenue being anything other than a non starter, they have around 150 attendances unless they play either FC Halifax or United, bringing them into the equation doesn't make economic sense, hopefully that was just a throw away comment.

City are in no need to move to Odsal, so why even refer to it.

Odsal isn't up to Football League standard anyhow so substantial funds would have to be spent if they moved.

The owners at BCFC have also cut the rent in half at VP to a managable amount after the purchase of the shops.

City were paying about £700k for both the Stadium and the shops, now the rent is closer to £350k as the shop rent has been removed.

The club do appear to make sure the ground is used through out the year to repay the current rent. There are parties in the suites throughout the year and various events when the club isn't been used on matchdays.

You are completely correct. You'd have the cost of demolition/filling the bowl on top of the cost of the other BRAND NEW STADIA I quoted.

I'm sure that £6m would pay for a minor upgrade to Odsal, but it's currently one of the worst grounds in Super League and it would take hundreds of millions before it could be called the 'Wembley of the North' which was the point I was contending.

Why would they demolish it to re-build??

I think you are missing the point Khan & Sutcliffe are wanting to turn Odsal into something that is used for other activities other than Rugby thus can genrate more income.

Wembley is a multi use stadium, maybe they are alluding to this rather than spending milllons a building a new stadium.....

FGS, read the quote correctly- and check the facts, before making crap comments.
.

The quote reads- “they hope to arrange a meeting with bosses at Bradford Park Avenue about sharing ‘A’ ground at Odsal.” What does the word ‘A’ say to you?
.

Also, BPA average over 400 for non FCHT & FCUM games, and I expect them to average over 500 this season, if they continue to progress.
.

As ‘yangyeight’ states, Avenue paid off all their debts when going bust in 1974- around £800K in today’s money- using average earnings, which is more than can be said for the Bulls and City- who, from memory, have ‘gone bust’ on two & three occasions respectively.
.

Add to that, the numerous insolvencies suffered by Leeds U, Huddersfield T and Halifax T, there’s only one club around here who honoured their debts.

"there’s only one club around here who honoured their debts" yes and it put them back 20+years very honourable? the whole reason clubs go into admin is because they can't pay there way going forward so they create a CVA situation re Bradford City the creditors agree they will recieve something rather than nothing if they are liquidated, not good for the creditors but at least they get some thing back, think it was 10 pence in the pound for City's creditors

Storck says...
1:59pm Mon 3 Sep 12

So is it a CVA or liquidation with some assets been sold?

Simple question but why can't the T&A just put that in a story.

I'm guessing liquidation as creditors do not know what is happening but the local paper should just say that in one of the many stories.

couple of points here, i mentioned it because lawn did last year, if sharing was not an option why were city thinking of buying bulls?
and the £350k you mention is more like £370k plus other payments so more like £700k at least.
before they sold shop etc it was £1.25m.

why are half of the kiosks and turnstiles shut every game?

Rent is around the £350k mark, what other payments are you refering too as I was asked for the rent figure not the rates, water, electric, insurance, gas, etc so I responded accordingly.

Being a City fan you will also know that the Rhodes family have personal guarantees on the lease of VP from Gibb as set out in the last admin.

The turnstiles were struggling because there weren't enough for 50/50 tickets, all season ticket holders got in no problem, this is something that will be changed at future games.

Half the food kiosks are shut because they were build with crowds of 18k in mind during the premiership, as we get half of that we only need half of the kiosks.

Yea I saw it on sky last night and have just checked my tickets for next week and they say 16.00, which is obviously 15.00 over here. The fixture list did not say that and with no official bulls site running it's a good job it has been spotted. I'm staying in Perpignan but some of my mates are coming up from lloret so they need to reorganise. This can't have just happened as I bought tickets a couple of weeks ago, when it seemed definite that we would finish the season. Then I read that the hull game would not have gone ahead if the purchase had not been finalised. Great being a fan isn't it?

Can't see Park Avenue being anything other than a non starter, they have around 150 attendances unless they play either FC Halifax or United, bringing them into the equation doesn't make economic sense, hopefully that was just a throw away comment.
they pay their bills at horsfall so surely sharing costs at odsal would be cheaper and save the bulls a few quid?
always worth exploring, just cos city are pig stubborn does not mean park avenue are!!
cheaper for city to go there but SOME fans just like cutting nose off to spite face.
BCFC don't need to move up to Odsal, what's that got to do with spite? I've always thought the best move would be for the Bulls to move to Valley Parade, but i can't see that move taking place. For me bringing Park Avenue into the equation is a non starter, even if they got 300 to 500 fans regularly, how does that work economically, it looks and sounds ludicrous, for me the Bulls should look at a complete ground refurb then look at holding pop/rock concerts in the summer with world class artists performing.

Good luck, let's hope Mr Khan makes it a success, it would be fantastic not only for Bradford Bulls RLFC but also for the whole of the City of Bradford.

Anti drug, stop taking them lad. You are a 100% dyed in the wool idiot. Go join the rest of the trolls. When do you go back to school? If sutcliffe has declared interests to the house of where he gets his money from then it's ok. Wil you tell me where you get yours from? I contributed to the well being of this country, all through my working life, 50 years in fact. I can see the future you strange little person, the Bulls are in it. Oh, when you get back in school, ask your English teacher to give you extra lessons. Nice try, SLC52, aka BCFC LAD, TBC. Try not to be too clever when posting gives you away.

some one mentioned a Roof, would it be like wembley? Or another of the Onion shaped roofs That we now see all over bradford?
Will sutcliffe lose his Parliamentary seat in the next election? and has seen odsal as his next back pocket filler? Last 14 months claims £188k expenses, What the hell is his salary?
If he loses his seat, then has he just jumped on another band wagon?
Dont get me wrong but i would dearly like to see Odsal Stadium Revamped
and the Bulls have a secure future, But sorry i would not put money on it While GS is there
