A 32-year-old man died when his car ploughed into a lamppost in Guiseley yesterday.

The victim, of Bingley, who had not been named by police last night, suffered fatal injuries when the blue Peugeot 307 he was driving went out of control on the A65 Leeds Road near the junction with Nunroyd Avenue at 6am. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were not releasing details of the dead man until relatives had been informed, though tributes were yesterday being paid on social media sites to the victim, whom friends named as Rob Dryden.

He is understood to have worked for Bradford Council as a duty sports centre manager in the Keighley area.

Investigating police officers have appealed for information from anyone who saw the crash or the car in the moments leading up to it.

Firefighters from Rawdon and Shipley were called to the accident opposite Nunroyd Avenue and outside West Side retail park.

Watch Commander Rob Hart, of Rawdon fire station, said his crew was the first to arrive at the scene and tried to resuscitate the man, who was trapped in the Peugeot, until colleagues from Shipley arrived.

Leeds Road was closed from Kirk Lane throughout the morning, with traffic being re-directed from West Side retail park, causing delays and congestion on sideroads.

Police carried out an investigation at the scene. People living close to the scene of the crash described how they were woken by a loud band.

A resident of Nunroyd Avenue, who did not want to be named, said: “We heard a very loud bang which sounded like metal on metal, and of course it was a car on a lamppost. It is very, very sad.”

Another neighbour said: “It was an incredibly loud noise, and we’ve been told someone has died. It’s an awful thing for any family to have to deal with.”

The Coroner has been informed and an inquest will be held at a later date.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police on (01924) 293047 or via 101.
