A large police cordon was set up in Bradford city centre yesterday after a man was found injured and unconscious.

The 28-year-old man was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary after being found in Manor Row, near its junction with Upper Piccadilly.

The cordon, guarded throughout much of the day by officers, covered a large area.

Buildings within the police tape included York House, a former gentlemen’s club built in 1866 and recently converted into about 24 apartments.

Yesterday afternoon, a police officer could be seen standing just inside the main entrance to York House and speaking to people going in and out.

Further up Manor Row, the former County Court building, also converted into apartments, and Malik House, a business centre, also fell within the extended cordon.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 5.36am police were contacted by the ambulance service who were attending an injured man who had been found unconscious in Manor Row, Bradford. The 28-year-old was taken to the Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment. His injuries are not life- threatening.

Detectives are carrying out inquiries to establish the full circumstances.”

Mike Smith, 21, who came to Bradford from London to study at the city’s university, said he was “shocked” to see the cordon.

The 21-year-old, who lives in an apartment at the converted former County Court, said he had enjoyed his time in the listed building, which was transformed into apartments in a £1.4 million scheme, and said the incident was “out of character” for Manor Row.

Mr Smith, who has just completed his studies in the city, said last night: “I woke up this morning and saw the cordon and thought ‘what’s happened?’ I was just going to church when I saw it and it was a bit of a shock. Police have not told me anything about what’s happened.”

Meanwhile, Adam Crossdale woke to find his car was within the cordon and described the scene as “quite worrying.”

The 23-year-old, who had been staying with a friend at Stone Gate House, just off Manor Row, said: “It’s a bit of a culture shock. I’d been staying with a friend overnight and woke up to see this in the morning. I’m just relieved my car hasn’t been damaged by whatever has happened. The police haven’t told us anything.”

He was allowed by police to retrieve his car in the cordon so he could return to his home in Castleford.

Several nearby businesses, including Malik House, are thought to have CCTV cameras on Manor Row. Footage is likely to be studied by police.

A worker at a nearby business, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s a bit of a mystery as to what’s happened. The police just told me it happened at about 5.30am.”

Anyone who has any information should call Bradford South CID via 101.
