Street in ‘appalling state’ to be resurfaced two years after £1m centre regeneration

A senior councillor has confirmed that road repairs will be made to a deteriorating High Street little more than two years after it was part of a £1m regeneration scheme.

Numerous complaints have been made about the state of Yeadon High Street following the major project, including calls from three Liberal Democrat ward councillors for repair work.

But now Leeds City Council has confirmed that it will do remedial work along the road, having taken samples of the surface away for analysis earlier this year.

Highways officers have agreed to resurface the road and put in a special membrane to strengthen it and stop it deteriorating again, and the work will take place this financial year.

The news has been welcomed by the three Lib Dems representing the Otley and Yeadon ward, who had previously hit out at the council for the problems, but said it should never have happened in the first place.

Councillor Ryk Downes said: “I’m pleased that we’re finally making progress on getting Yeadon High Street up to the condition residents are entitled to expect.

“The road is in an appalling state and residents should not have had to suffer it for so long.”

Councillor Richard Lewis, the council’s executive member for economy and development, said: “It is good to see Lib Dem councillors recognising the commitment the Labour Council in Leeds has made to improve the condition of our road network, with Yeadon High Street being a prime example of this work.

“Despite the huge cuts to our budget imposed by the Government, we continue to prioritise investment in our road network and fund an ongoing maintenance programme.”

As part of the £1m regeneration scheme, the carriageway was moved and the road narrowed.

Just think : Instead of putting obstacles in the road, speed humps, they could use that tarmac usefully by filling in the bloody potholes.

Its good to hear other ares news but come on LEEDS and a stupid road, if the job had been done correctly it would not have needed doing again "cutting corners" again.

I wonder what the quality of legal & contractual staff our councils are employing.
I've worked on supermarket and office developments where private companies insist on a 10 or 15 year guarantee on car parks and the contractors have to repair any problems for the entire period.
Why are councils paying people to do the work and then repairing it themselves soon after?

I sincerely hope the original contractors that did such a shoddy job in the first place are sued and never considered for work by local authorities again.

Council workers should do their job and research contractors! Not give the jobs to their mates or go with the first quote.

There is also the problem of when contractors hear the word "council", prices shoot up 300%!! These scum are ripping off the council thinking they are getting back their taxes, they are not! They are taking money away from other services! And then these b*****ds have the nerve to complain about other council services!

And as we've seen, they charge 3 times the price, but the work isnt worth half of what it should have been!

We all know this happens, and it needs to be better regulated, I've seen this first hand on government grants and I am shocked that the scheme supervisors just ignore it.

I once wrote a 30 page complaint to the DECC regarding Warmfront, they simple brushed it aside! A 30 page complaint and they ignored it, what type of person sees a 30 page complaint and thinks nothing of it?!

West Yorkshire roads are some of the worst I've seen in the whole of the country, which is why during most of my 30+ years of motorcycling I refused to buy a tax disc.

Two thousand years back the Romans managed to build roads and buildings that lasted centuries - indeed some are still around.

In the 21st century why is a council incapable of building a road that last 2 years?

So you are not paying towards the roads you are using?

Was using. But why should I, when motorcycles do no damage to the roads but are the road-users most affected by lack of repair? When they fix the roads I'll pay my road tax, was my motto. Most damage is done by buses and wagons, not cars or bikes.

Modern traffic wears out the roads. Romans were on foot.
