Eight people were arrested in police raids during a clampdown on brothels being run on suburban streets in Bradford.

Three women and two men were held yesterday at residential properties in Lidget Green and Laisterdyke in co-ordinated swoops.

Four of the arrests were made at a stone-built, mid-terrace house in Beckside Road.

Residents watched as police teams battered down the white uPVC front door with a ram and burst into the premises.

A naked woman and a man were found in a bed in the downstairs front room. Another couple were found in bed in the upstairs bedroom.

A fair-haired man in a grey T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms was led from the house, handcuffed to an officer, and placed in the back of a police van.

He was followed by a dark-haired man in a green T-shirt and blue jeans. Minutes later two dark-haired women were led from the premises and put in a separate police van.

The raids followed information from members of the public.

Sergeant Tom Casey, who led Operation Sweet Ward, said: “Two males, aged 37 and 23, and two females, aged 25 and 23, have been arrested from this address on suspicion of managing a brothel for the purposes of prostitution. They will be interviewed about that allegation.”

An amount of cash and a number of documents were seized.

A 25-year-old woman was also arrested from the address at Laisterdyke, and mobile phones and business cards seized.

Searches were made at the properties, both of which are small terraced houses. Scenes-of-crime officers attended, along with officers from the North East Immigration crime team.

Earlier in the week a similar raid took place at an address in Fagley Place. Two women, aged 21 and 19, were arrested. They admitted managing and keeping a brothel used for prostitution and were given adult cautions.

A 43-year-old man, who was also arrested, was later released without charge.

Police are investigating possible links between the three addresses.

The raids took place following intelligence from the community to neighbourhood police, which was passed to the Vice Team. The brothel was understood to be advertised on a website. There were believed to be three Eastern European female occupants.

Sgt Casey said the search warrants were executed as a result of concerns from the community regarding addresses in residential areas that may be used as brothels and causing anti-social behaviour.

“As a result of the information, we have taken this positive action,” he said. “These premises are in a residential area, where there are families and children. We are keen to reduce anti-social behaviour.”

Inspector Vicky Lawrance, of the City ward Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The running of brothels is a form of anti-social behaviour and it is important we disrupt those involved and prevent their activities from continuing. We are not prepared to accept the negative effects it can have.”
