Volunteers raise cash for Majestic steam roller restoration
2:50pm Tuesday 8th May 2012 in News By Telegraph & Argus
Volunteers have raised £300 towards the restoration of an old steam roller.
Built in 1929, the steam roller was later installed in Pudsey Park where children played on it for several decades until it was removed in 1990.
It was rescued from being scrapped and the Friends of Pudsey Roller was set up to raise £30,000 to restore it.
The roller, called Majestic, was supplied to Yorkshire West Riding County Council. When its working life ended in 1959, it was bought by Alderman Sir Walter Ward, who presented it to the Borough of Pudsey, and placed in Pudsey Park.
A recent talk on steam cranes raised £300 and Mr Woolhouse said other fundraising talks were planned, including one on trolley buses.
The Friends of Pudsey Roller’s AGM is on Thursday at Farsley Liberal Club at 8pm. New members are welcome.
