Voters have rejected the idea of having an elected mayor in yesterday's referendum.

The result was announced at 6.30am showing that 53.2 per cent of voters said 'no', while 43.3 per cent said 'yes'.

Actual figures were 66,283 against, 53,949 in favour, and 4,314 ballot papers rejected. The turnout was 37 per cent.
