A woman was fighting for her life yesterday with head injuries after a serious assault at her Bradford home.

Police continued to guard the brick town house in Libby Street, off Carlisle Road, Manningham, over the weekend.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and was in police custody yesterday after what is thought to be a domestic-related incident.

Neighbours said a man and woman had moved into the modern terraced property, opposite a popular children’s play area, six months ago.

One said: “We don’t know them by name because they’re quite new around here. They moved in about six months ago and have children with them. One’s about 12, the other seven and then one a bit younger. I’ve seen them in the playground, they’re happy little things.

“I haven’t really seen the man and woman together.

“He comes in at night then she’s about in the day time with the children.

“I don’t know what happened over there but police have been stood outside for a few days now. I haven’t heard anything.”

A police officer was on guard on Saturday outside the house, which had earlier been cordoned off with tape. The curtains in the house were closed.

Another neighbour, who also did not want to be named, said no-one had been back at the house since the alleged assault happened.

“There’s been no one there except the police. It happened during Thursday daytime so no one round here really saw anything.

“There’s not been any trouble there before, I don’t think.

“I’ve never heard anything. I don’t think the man and woman are a married couple, they’re girlfriend and boyfriend but there’s some children living with them. I don’t know where they are now.

“It’s usually peaceful round here. Not much goes on except in the playground that gets busy.”

The incident took place at about 11.40pm on Thursday, police said.

A police spokesman said: “There was a serious assault on April 26.

“A 33-year-old woman was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary with serious head injuries. She was still critical.

“A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody.”
