Oil paintings, photography and performance art will fill the void left after an opticians shop closed two years ago, when the frontman of Bradford band Terorvision opens a new pop-up gallery.

Tony Wright and a group of his artist pals will take over the former Specsavers shop in Keighley’s Airedale Centre – which they have transformed into a Victorian Parlour – for artists from Bradford district to exhibit their work.

Tony, who is also the lead singer of rockers Laika Dog, said the six-week exhibition will feature traditional art alongside photography, film and a jewellery exhibition.

There will also be a corner for poets, singers and performers at the temporary gallery, called the Artistic Off Licence.

Tony, who set up the exhibition with his friend Jonny Morall, said: “Jonny called everybody up and said ‘are you up for an exhibition, there’s two empty shops in the Airedale Centre’ so we approached the manager and he liked the idea.

“He gave us the keys a week or two ago and we built the room as a replica of a traditional Victorian parlour, where we are going to have more traditional art such as oil painting, watercolours and drawing and in another area, we will have photography and film.”

He added: “There are a lot of derelict places about, but some of them only look derelict because they haven’t got a painting on the wall. Hopefully, people will come in and see what we are doing and go home and do it themselves.”

Jonathan Morall, of Oakworth, Keighley, said the gallery would provide a free alternative for hard-pressed local artists who cannot afford to show their work in traditional galleries.

Organisers of the Beat-Herder festival have provided interior decoration for the gallery, which will open on Saturday.

Jonny said: “It costs a lot of money to get wall space for people to show their art works in galleries and I thought this would be a fantastic showcase for people from our area to display their work.”

Artist Diana Blagg, of Bingley, who will be displaying her lino prints, said: “I think it is brilliant. I’m a single parent and have a low paid job so it is a lot of juggling for me. This is an opportunity to get a free space where you can do what you want. It is not a boring white gallery!”
