A fundraising campaign to give a Bradford girl the gift of sight is three quarters of the way to reaching its target, after the price of the treatment tumbled.

Larelle Ellsworth, 23, of Little Horton, started a campaign in January 2011 – Seeing Through Lamiyah’s Eyes – after her daughter was approved for ground-breaking stem cell treatment in China.

It was a glimmer of hope for Lamiyah Ellsworth, who turns three on June 21. She has been blind since birth and aged three months she was diagnosed with the rare brain condition septo optic dysplasia.

It means her mid-brain structures are not fully developed and both her optic nerves are small, resulting in blindness and developmental delays.

Doctors in the UK have told Larelle there is no cure and she would just have to help her daughter learn to live with the condition.

However, the devoted mum did not accept this and submitted Lamiyah’s medical details to a clinic in China and was thrilled when Beike Biotechnology Co Ltd accepted her for treatment.

It involves injecting stem cells into the spinal canal and originally Larelle was quoted £50,000 for a month-long treatment programme.

She has now found out the treatment price has been reduced to £30,000.

She said: “It is an amazing step forward for us because it means we are closer to the mark. The reason for this is because China have come up with another option of getting the same amount of treatment injections but in a shorter stay, so we won’t be out there as long as we originally would have.”

Larelle is now preparing for major fundraising drive over the summer in a bid to move closer to her dream for Lamiyah.

An event at the Ivory Bar, in Bradford, will raise money for the appeal on June 3. Doors open at 2pm and a talent show starts at 3.30pm, which will feature an appearance by Larelle’s aunt, Anthea Oxley.

On June 23 there will be a fun day for children at the Newby Square pub, in Bradford (formally know as Red Gin).

From 1pm onwards there will be a bouncy castle, face-painting and a live band playing.

Larelle, who is also pushing for a second opinion for her daughter from doctors in Newcastle, said: “We are three quarters of the way there and we hope to raise the rest as soon as possible. Together we can give Lamiyah the chance to see the world through her eyes.”

To help Lamiyah donate to a charity bank account: HSBC, branch sort code 40-13-15, account number: 34402545. Cheques can be made payable to: Seeing Through Lamiyah’s Eyes.
