The new MP for Bradford West has called for a Labour councillor who was disqualified as a company director for seven years after his company went into liquidation to resign his seat.

George Galloway says that Council leader Ian Greenwood should also go because he has taken no action against Councillor Imdad Hussain since the order was made in February last year.

Coun Hussain, 42, of Bingley Road, Bradford, who represents Heaton ward, ran Claimwise Legal Services Ltd, registered at Commercial House, 140-148 Manningham Lane, Bradford.

An order was made on February 10, last year, disqualifying him as a company director for seven years from March 3, 2011.

The Government’s official Insolvency Service record states Hussain “failed to either maintain or preserve or deliver up to the Official Receiver, as Liquidator of Claimwise Legal Services Limited (“Claimwise”), accounting records, books, papers or other correspondence sufficient to provide a satisfactory and adequate explanation of the following company transactions which took place between 20 November 2007 and 31 July 2009, and on being formally required to do, he has failed to provide a satisfactory and verifiable account for these transactions; The specific source and reasons for miscellaneous counter deposits totalling £591,978 made into two bank accounts used exclusively by Claimwise; How and why cash withdrawn, totalling £845,341, was expended; and the specific reasons why payments totalling £84,950 were made by Claimwise to a bank account in the sole name of his wife; The result has been that Claimwise has been left with an unexplained deficiency as regards creditors totalling £314,873”.

Mr Galloway said: “Council leader Ian Greenwood has known all about it for almost a year and has done nothing about it.”

He said he would also be referring the matter to Local Government Minister Grant Shapps.

“The rules don’t appear to disqualify people from public office who are themselves disqualified from running a public company,” Mr Galloway said. “The rules clearly need to be tightened substantially.”

Councillor Hussain and Councillor Greenwood both declined to comment last night.
