A huge two-tonne cross is once again catching the eye of everyone in Otley – thanks to a “superhuman” volunteer effort.
A total of 38 volunteers headed up to Surprise View, at the top of Otley Chevin, to help install the Chevin Cross in time for the Easter celebrations.
The wooden monument, first erected by the Otley Council of Christian Churches in the late 1960s, has been a striking springtime landmark for the past 44 years.
A 7am service will be held at the foot of the cross on Easter Sunday and it will then remain in place for another fortnight before being dismantled.
Otley Methodist Church steward John Burland said: “It normally takes about 50 or more people to haul the cross into position, but this year only 38 men and women turned up to erect it.”
Anyone interested in taking the cross down should meet at Surprise View car park at 9am on Saturday, April 21.
