Royal Mail to close three delivery offices

the Bingley mail delivery office the Bingley mail delivery office

by Marc Meneaud Aire Valley Chief Reporter Royal Mail has confirmed that it will be shutting three delivery offices in the Bradford district despite it being accused of “arrogance” by ignoring its own customers.

A spokesman for the company yesterday confirmed that offices in Shipley, Bingley and Bradford West at Thornton will close.

Its operation will move to the Bradford North delivery office in Inkersley Road, Bradford.

The move will take place this summer as part of Royal Mail’s modernisation programme, which it described as “one of the biggest transformations in UK industry”.

However, critics have hit out at Royal Mail bosses for making such a crucial decision – one which will affect tens of thousands of residents in the Aire Valley and west Bradford – without any public consultation on the subject.

Baildon parish councillor Debbie Davies wrote to Royal Mail’s chief executive after the company announced it was looking into whether to close the Shipley delivery office, asking if there would be any public consultation.

However, a spokesman for the company wrote back to her, stating “The company is not obliged to consult publicly on its proposals”.

Mrs Davies said yesterday: “I think it makes Royal Mail sound very arrogant and not at all interested in its customers, which is not good news for local people.

“I only asked two questions: how many items on average are collected per week from the Shipley office and what plans – if any – they have for consulting on this change with customers. They have not really answered either question.

“This will cause inconvenience for elderly people or people with no transport, who will have to go right into Bradford to pick up parcels. It will not make it easy for them.”

Royal Mail spokesman Morag Turnbull said it was “constantly reviewing” efficiency in all its offices during increasingly tough trading conditions, a greater use of e-mail and social networking for communications, and a 40 per cent decline in the volume of mail in the past five years.

She said: “As part of our business-wide modernisation programme, we are currently undertaking one of the biggest transformations in UK industry.

“Royal Mail is investing in new technology and equipment and upgrading operational facilities in order to ensure that we have world- class facilities which provide the most efficient and effective network for delivering the post.

“The consolidation of delivery offices will play a major part in allowing us to place the business on a sound, secure and stable footing.

“We are in the early planning stage for the move and have shared our plans with our people.

“We will continue to work with them and the union on these changes.

“Almost no other company has daily contact with its customers in the way Royal Mail does, so we wish to continue providing consistent and high-quality services to our customers in the Bingley, Shipley and Bradford West area and across the UK.”

So where are elderly people supposed to collect parcels etc? Round where I live the van men knock at the door, push a card through and go straight back to their vans and away - no time for elderly or disablesd to answer the door. You then have to wait 24 hours and go to the sorting office to collect the item - a lot of people won't be able to do this if they move to Inkersley Road. You can request re-delivery, but the same thing will probably happen again!!

It baffles me how their plans to improve profitability involve making their products more difficult to use.
I'm out during the day, so use their pick up facility quite a lot.
If this plan comes to fruition, I'll be making sure that I pick the delivery option that uses UPS or DHL because I know collection will be easier.

If it's down to a decline in use, why do I always have to queue when I pick something up?

Can I just point out that there's always an option to have parcels re-delivered to your local post office (many of which have more convenient opening hours than the sorting offices).

Via Internet then your local corner shop, very reasonable priced too far cheaper and quicker and track able.

This is good news for me . . . I am sick of having to take 2 buses to get to the Bradford West office.

Will be good just to have to drop down into Bradford north to pick anything up I missed.

No wonder that the private courier businesses are growing.

The Royal Mail (i.e. GPO) shouldn't have to be cost effective or accountable for "profitability", it should be run like any other Nationalized industry; provide an essential service funded by taxation.

In the meantime, it would help if the postie would SHUT MY GATE in a morning!!!!

Post offices closing....Sorting Offices closing....but Royal Mail just send me notification that new price rises in April unavoidable....this on top of rises of around 8%...each of last 2 yrs.Where does all the money go?...top earners salaries and bonuses....eg Adam Crozier..I could understand this tactic in inner city areas but semi rural where distance travelled much greater and public transport less frequent??...unemplo
yment higher here so not only difficult for old but expensive for poor to collect parcels.
Less letters because of email but MORE parcels since explosion of internet retailing, as the shops left on the high street offer limited choice.
It is just another nail in the coffin for local communities/economie

I have had parcels left at a local post office by royal mail or parcelforce, this is a great idea but they seem to have stopped doing it for some reason. Trailing to the sorting office is a chore.

They charge for that service and the packet/parcel has to be under a certain weight so not an option for many people I'm afraid!

When you are out and they stick a card through the door it makes me laugh when it says "ring the number to arrange redelivery" - I have never yet been able to get them to answer the phone!! Also I have called into the sorting office on numerous occasions (because shock, horror I work and can't be at home when its convenient for the Royal Mail to deliver my parcel) and I have seen them just standing round ignoring the phone which is ringing it head off! Maybe this will make then actually treat people like customers instead of nuisances which the Royal Mail and Firstbus seem to do

Take your camp bed and a flask with you then BabyDave - people are usually queueing out of the doors on a good day, then they completely ignore you or leave the desk unmanned for ages. Last time I went the phone was ringing out and 3 blokes were drinking coffee and completely ignoring it, what the hell they will do when their "work" increases threefold I have no idea!

Royal Mail obviously not doing their bit to reduce their carbon footprint. How many extra thousands of gallons of fuel will now be burnt every year, as customers have to travel many miles to collect their parcels ?

Pick em up from your local Post Office? We used to have 4 Post Offices within a 10 minute walk from my house, now there is just one and you can be queing for at least 15 minutes before you get to the counter.

It's 72 hours now as they drop off at post office and they have to go back through system as if newly posted!

I my charge you 50p to have re delivery to a post office but it free to re arrange re delivery to your home anyway so no fuss is needed. I've done this and also gone to the office and found my postie has picked it back up anyway and tried to deliver it to me the next day out of his own kindness and initiative (wasting my time yes but also being kind and thinking of me!). So I think there is no need to fuss on this one at all! Call or re arrange the service on line, the details are on the car and if it's another company, well you can do the same and your parcel has nothing to do with RM on that occasion anyway!

Before there is any more postie bashing on here, let's go back a few years. We went out on strike multiple times due to the direction the company was taking, and what was the general response from joe public? "Get back to work, you are lucky to have a job".
Well this is what happens when you don't stick together and show apathy. Eventually the knock is on your door and here it is, we warned the public. This is the tip of the iceberg. Royal mail will slash and slash, it can operate as a private company. Let's be realistic, nobody is going to go through other couriers, they cost more and their offices are usually as far as leeds and are hard to find.
My suggestion is that many of you get parcel boxes or agreed safeplaces for posties to leave parcels for you.

I get lots of stuff via private couriers, if I miss one they leave me a note and I can ring the guy direct and tell him I'm home now, They then come back the same day! Do Royal Mail do that?

As a matter of fact, Royal mail tried to do this and were stopped by postcomm as it was deemed unfair to our competitors. the public simply don't understand the restrictions that RM are under compared to other companies. Also, I regularly get parcel deliveries and have found RM by far the most reliable, even if it is gradually getting worse.
