Bradford district is braced for forecast snow

Bradford is bracing itself for a weekend of sub-zero temperatures with a forecast of heavy snowfall and ice today and temperatures falling to as low as minus eight degrees centigrade.

Charities have been preparing for the Siberian blast to ensure homeless people are not left out in the cold.

Major Martin Wheeler, leader at Bradford Salvation Army Citadel, said: “From our perspective we will be able to offer what we normally do – if people need food parcels we can give those out. There’s no problems.

“We have some coats left from our Christmas coat appeal so we have those available for those who might need them.

“We are available to support those who get in touch with us.”

And Inn Churches, an organisation which provides shelter to homeless people during the winter, is continuing its service until the end of this month.

In the first seven weeks of the season it housed 43 people at churches in Bradford, with the help of more than 400 volunteers and 65 churches.

The scheme sees churches across Bradford open their doors to the homeless for a week at a time.

During a visit to the project at St Stephen’s Church, West Bowling, Bishop of Bradford the Right Reverend Nick Baines said it was “making a real difference to people who are at an acute time of need in their lives”.

Met Office weather forecaster Helen Chivers gave a prediction of the weather to come over the next few days.

She said: “The cloud moving in from the Atlantic heralds a spell of snow over time from midday onwards today. It could fall quite heavily for a while in the afternoon, into the evening.

“We could see 5cm of snow in places with up to 10cm on the hills – really quite a wintry spell into the evening.”

She warned frost was likely to return tonight, which could leave ice on the roads tomorrow morning.

She said it would remain cold in Bradford into next week.

Do the Council know it is going to snow this afternoon?
Do the Council workers go out with gritters and snowploughs at weekends?

Just driven through the middle of town and saw 3 gritters, so they look prepared.

They can't even use the usual excuse that rush hour traffic stopped them gritting!
On the other hand the general public should also take some responsibility and not go out in the car- we've also had the same prior warning about the weather...

I have just driven back from Sheffield through Bradford to Bingley. The state of the roads (at time of writing) is shocking: they looked completely untreated (including Bradford/Airedale Rd). Cars on Cottingley Cliffe Rd were stopping at the side and putting hazards on/skidding about (including my own car which has snow tyres on it). I know the council always seem to be getting hammered for their efforts when it comes to gritting - but on this occasion it is most surely deserved. It's not even like we won't have a huge surplus of grit either (due to overstocking and an extremely mild winter).

What a shambles.

Manchester Road at 6.30 pm looked like it hadn't been treated since last year

As I said earlier in the day, perhaps those people complaining about the state of the roads have only got themselves to blame.
We were warned as early as Wednesday there was a bank of snow coming, so what on earth were people on the roads for?

Are you serious? How can road users be blamed for the state of the roads you numpty? It is the council's responsibility to ensure they are safe to drive on (or do you think they keep a fleet of gritters and a stockpile of grit for a laugh?).

Ooh, I don't know: maybe to go to work? Sounds crazy I know. Presumably you would prefer the country to effectively have a national holiday whenever there is snow?

I've read some dumb posts on here in my time but that one ranks alongside PIMPS and Jayho67's usual drivel.
