Bradford is set to open a new type of school, aimed at bridging the gap to the world of work.

An international food and travel ‘studio school’ was one of 12 yesterday approved by Government to open in September.

The Appleton Academy Trust, which is part of the Bradford College family, will teach the national curriculum and the same other key academic qualifications as traditional schools, as well as a range of vocational qualifications, including work placements with local and national employers.

In its submission to Government, the studio school said it would be based in Bradford city centre, close to Bradford College, and would cater for 310 students aged 14 to 19. It will offer opportunities in food preparation, logistics and cabin crew skills. Principal and chief executive of Bradford College, Michele Sutton, said: “We are delighted the application for a new studio school in Bradford has been approved.

“The establishment of this school will offer a wider range of opportunities for young people, preparing them for success and assisting in gaining employment in their chosen field. As the Studio School in International Food and Travel is a first of its kind in the country, it continues our long tradition of being pioneers in education.”
