Community groups in Bradford and district are celebrating after receiving a share of £1.38 million in grants from landfill tax charity Wren.

More than £440,000 has been given to 15 projects across Yorkshire and Humber in the latest donations by the not-for-profit business.

Newlands Community Association has received £42,788 for a community garden at the Rockwell Community Centre in Thorpe Edge. The money will be used to build paths and fencing and run volunteer days with Bradford Environmental Education Service.

Peter Tatham, who is managing the Roots and Fruits project, said: “We are delighted we have got the grant. We can now push ahead with the project and will hopefully have it completed within a year.”

A further £50,000 has been awarded to Steeton Parish Council towards the building of a single-storey community hub in Skipton Road. Plans have already been submitted for the hub, which will replace the outdated pavilion and include three meeting rooms, toilets and a tea-making room.

Other beneficiaries include Lund Park Community Group, which has received £41,371 to provide new play equipment and play opportunities at the park in Keighley and Prism Youth Project in Bradford which has been awarded £42,410 to refurbish the sports hall and provide accessible equipment for disadvantaged young people Ben Walker, of Wren, encouraged organisations to contact them to see it they were eligible for funding.
