A Bradford councillor is seeking people who suffer from a painful hip condition and who would like to join a campaign to get treatment for it made available on the NHS.

Councillor Jan Smithies (Lab, Keighley West), has been contacted by a constituent whose wife was diagnosed by her GP a year ago as having a condition called femoral acetabular impingement – known as hip inpingement.

It is a painful condition where an extra bit of bone protrudes from the pelvic bone. The resident, who does not want give their full names, has been told the treatment for this condition, a hip arthroscopy, is only available to private patients.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), is considering whether to recommend the treatment be made available on the NHS.

Once a decision has been made by NICE, NHS Bradford and Airedale, the local primary care trust, will consider whether to commission such operations for local people.

Coun Smithies, a member of Bradford Council’s health overview and scrutiny committee, said the resident wanted to publicise her case so she can find others locally who are suffering from the same condition and campaign to get the operation made available on the NHS.
