Wiltshire Council's Eastern area planning committee agreed to object to Marlborough College's plan to turn the Ivy House Hotel in Marlborough into a boarding house for its girl students.
The committee met last night and went against council officers' recommendation which was not to object.
The plan will be determined by the Planning Inspectorate after Marlborough College appealed against the council's failure to determine the planning application within eight weeks.
