A Bradford primary school has put cycling at the heart of its curriculum since the creation of an all-weather track in its grounds.

Scott Parkin, deputy head at Brackenhill Primary School, Lidget Green, believes it is the first school in the district to incorporate cycling into the school’s PE curriculum.

The cycling club at the school has gone from strength to strength since the cycle track was built in 2009. In addition, all the teachers at the school are cycling coaches.

Mr Parkin hopes to get 90 per cent of seven to 11-year-olds to proficiency level by next summer.

A keen cyclist himself having been an avid mountain biker in his native New Zealand, Mr Parkin was delighted to join a school that had a cycle track in its grounds.

He said: “I really wanted to make the best use of this fantastic facility so I have given our learning mentor, Peter Judson, the resources he needed to build up the cycling club from just three children to 24 and we are still attracting new members so hope to reach 30 very soon."

Bradford Council supplied some of the funding for the track, which is all-weather with three different levels that offer varying degrees of challenge, including obstacles and ramps.
