The Bradford-Leeds area won three gold medals, two silvers and three bronzes for Great Britain at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens. Golds went to Bradford’s Robert Burnett (team bowls), Menston’s Ben Horner (golf) and Shipley’s Nigel Halliday (powerlifting), while silvers were taken by Halliday and Leeds swimmer Robert Martin (4x50 metres relay).
Queensbury’s James Horsefall (basketball) and Halliday (twice) took bronzes, while Burnett was fourth in his bowls singles, as was Martin in the 25m butterfly, and he also came fifth in the 50m freestyle.
