The long-standing chairman of a charity which helps those affected by cancer in the Bradford and Airedale district has retired.

Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale has bid farewell to Sir James Hill, who has stood down from the charity’s board of trustees after 20 years of service.

During his tenure, Sir James saw the charity evolve from small beginnings in Little Germany in 1988.

The charity’s vision was to provide a permanent base with space to grow and develop. The board planned for this, mounting the Daisy Appeal in 2006.

As chairman, Sir James played an active role in supporting the appeal.

In September 2008 the vision became a reality, when the charity took possession of its purpose-built building, Daisy House Farm in Smith Lane, where more than 3,000 people a year receive support and advice. Sir James said: “Cancer Support may be the name, but for me it also encompasses the vision and the hands-on delivery by so many for so many.

“It has always been a happy place, both friendly and supportive. I will be always grateful for the opportunity to be involved in such a rewarding and worthwhile project.”
