An organisation which distributes food parcels to homeless and deprived families in Bradford could cease operating after donations dried up.

Demand is outweighing supply at the Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank and founder Lashman Singh said there is only enough food to keep it going for another three weeks.

“We have seen a sharp dip in donations over the past year. Money is tight and people don’t appear to have spare food to part with,” said Mr Lashman.

“We usually do quite well out of harvest festival donations but there wasn’t such a big contribution last time. Lots of charities are asking for donations. We know we’re not the only one, but we’re not asking for money – just small donations of tinned and dried food.”

Volunteers at the charity put donations of non-perishable items into food parcels and hand them to community workers who distribute them where needed most.

Mr Singh, who set up the food bank in 2006, had appealed for people to set up collection points for donations.

The charity sends out an average of 120 food parcels a month, but at Christmas the Telegraph & Argus reported that it had been forced to cut back on distribution because of dwindling donations. Now it looks set to close.

The group is holding its annual meeting on Wednesday, April 6, at 7.30pm. Anyone who would like to support it is welcome to attend.
