Soap and sport stars were out in force yesterday to boost the kitties of local charities.

Former England and Bradford City winger Lee Sharpe teamed up with a host of Emmerdale cast members to take on amateurs Old Headingley AFC.

Emmerdale actors taking part included Ben Freeman, who plays Scott Windsor, Kelvin Fletcher (Andy Sugden), Jim Hooton (Sam Dingle), Anthony Lewis (Mark Reynolds), Luke Tittensor (Daz Eden), Glenn Lamont (Richie Carter) and Cleveland Campbell (Danny Daggart).

The match at Farsley Celtic AFC was organised to raise money for the Yorkshire-based charity Epilepsy Action.

Lee Sharpe said: "Epilepsy Action is a very worthwhile charity and I was happy to support them by taking part in the charity football match."

His team came out winners, beating the Old Headingley side 4-2.

"I came here to win because I hate losing so I am more than happy with the result!" he said.

Post-match entertainment included a barbecue, an auction of sports memorabilia and music from Soulfire.

The annual event was expected to raise in excess of £3,000 for the charity that supports people with epilepsy.

Meanwhile at Idle Cricket Club, world-class former Test cricket players in the Lashings XI had a lot to prove as they took on a semi-professional team from the hosts for the second time.

Last year the star-studded team failed to conquer the Bradford club, so this year they had all to play for.

However, the Kent-based team got their revenge this time, triumphing by seven wickets after Idle had made 118, Richie Richardson being presented with the Telegraph & Argus Trophy as captain of the winning side.

Test players from around the world travelled to Cavendish Road to take part in the match that was raising money for the Martin House Hospice, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Idle Cricket Club's junior teams.

Former Yorkshire player and West Indies captain Richie Richardson led the Lashings side, and Mark Nicklin captained Idle Cricket Club.

Also playing were former England all-rounder Phil De Freitas, West Indian fast bowler Vasbert Drakes and Lashings team manager, West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharran.

The match was sponsored by Foresters, the insurance company social and fraternal benefit society.

Idle captain Mark Nicklin said: "It's been a smashing day for everyone and a real triumph for the club to have pulled this off for the second year running.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to our sponsors for helping us to make it happen and to all the staff at the club for working so hard to make it a success."
