A fundraising Bradford team is preparing a clapped-out, old banger for the road ahead of a mass charity car rally to southern Spain.

Project Kanky team members Emon Choudhury, 26, Reshma Begum 27, Ezazul Islam and Amina Begum, both 25, will be squeezing into a £300 Nissan Sunny for the four-day trip to raise money to send emergency aid to Pakistani flood victims.

They will be one of 50 teams setting off from London to Andalucia, via France, in cars worth no more than £400 on Saturday, October 23, to raise money for their chosen charity, the Muslim Hands Trust.

Billed as an “adrenaline-fuelled adventure of a lifetime”, the Andalucian Rally is not a race but sees participants take in the heartlands of European Islamic history.

The event ends in a party in Andalucia on Tuesday, October 26. Prizes will be awarded for the most flamboyant car and the team that raises the most money.

Mr Choudhury, of Project Kanky, which is one of a number of teams from West Yorkshire taking part, hopes the team will attract sponsorship from businesses in the district in the next couple of weeks.

He said: “We are a team of two girls and two guys from Bradford, who’ve bought our Nissan Sunny for £220. We plan to make our way to Andalucia and back to Bradford within a week.

“Companies that sponsor us will have their company logo put on the vehicles as well as our mechanic’s overalls that all members are wearing.

“Our Nissan was kindly donated by my brother-in-law Shahid Chowdhury. It is valued at around £300 and we have £100 more to spend on servicing and getting the car ready for the rally.”

Mr Choudhury, who has taken on some bold conquests for charity in the past including climbing Mount Everest and running the London Marathon, hope to raise about £2,000 for the team’s nominated cause.

The Muslim Hands Trust is an non-governmental organisation which works in more than 40 countries to help people affected by natural disasters, conflict and poverty. To sponsor Project Kanky, visit justgiving.com/rally4floods.
